How long did it take you?
Female here. I ran a ton of 5K’s in the 20-21:00 range and it took me about a year of dedicated training to break it. I was 33 years old. I think part of it was a mental block because I was within 10 seconds of it a few times. But I did it.
My first 5k was under 20 at age 12 or whatever. No training besides recess and stuff.
Why do you keep posting here? I do not ask NBA players how hard they worked to make their HS basketball team?
I started running around 2012 and broke it 2018. Female. I’d broken 21 about maybe 1.5-2 years prior? Then I did 3 5ks down to under 20 in a few weeks. My training was jogging by myself and doing weekend races, mostly 20-30k a week. I train properly now.
I ran a local 5k in 18 minutes at age 12 on no training.
Female here also. I ran "intermittently" during my early to mid 20s at a weight of around 130-135 pounds and I typically ran the 5K in around 23 minutes on the rare occasion that I ran a race. Around age 29 I got serious about cleaning up my diet and actually training, and it took me maybe 2 years to drop about 20 pounds and get under 20 minutes. I ended up with a PR of 18:10 at 105 pounds at age 33.

About 3 weeks of XC training in HS sophmore year. Ran 18:16 for first race. Good genes and being an active kid made a difference. At 52 recently ran 18:13 which is the 2nd time i have run 18 min for 5k all other times faster.
Good luck!
Started running at age 39.
Ran 19:48 six years later. (12 months after running 20:09 on the same course.)
35-40 mpw with weekly tempo (20-30min), interval (1000m x 4-5) and rep (400m x 12).
Started running age 12 where before I was avoiding all exercise. My first 5k was 26:01. I made it when I was 13 sophomore year, in 19:19. Later that year I ran 18:51 (still 13 years old). Hope that helps you !!

Took me about 2 months off the couch.
I never ran a race as a kid where I didn’t break 20. Got old and fat and didnt work out at all. Took me a couple of years of off and on training and losing some weight to finally break 20 in my late 30s.
zero. Joined the xc team was hurt to start the season first ever practice was a race, went sub 20 with ease having never ran a day in my life before.
The cross country races that I ran in high school weren't 5K, so I didn't run one until a several years later. I think I ran my first official 5K road race in 15:16.
Before I became a runner, I had run an annual 10K race on no training in 58, 56, and 54 minutes at ages 13, 14, and 15 respectively. A few months after the 54 minute 10K, I decided to join my high school cross country team for my junior year, so I trained over the summer. I ran 8 miles the first day, 9 miles the next day, and then kept up 9 miles a day (63 mpw) without a day off over the summer. My first cross country races were worth about 17-flat if converted to 5K (sub-17 if on a flatter course).
Are you the "Army is just like the Marines" guy again?

Jesus, you are talented
Been training for 6 years (since age 14) with high school and college club teams and still haven’t done it. Female.
How the heck did you do this and not get hurt? You’re invincible!
To answer the OP’s question, about two years of running.
I ran 20 low as a freshman in high school during my first XC season. Didn’t run sub 20 until the summer before my junior year in a road race. My coach and training were both really bad.
