Also lost in the shuffle is that Solinsky dropped a 12:55, cucking both Ritz and Rupp in the process, still making him the fastest American not named Bernard Lagat.
Cucking? WTF is wrong with you? Ritz ran 12:56 and Rupp ran 12:58. Still both fantastic times. And both of those guys managed to not trip over dogs on the stairs and end their careers.
Solinsky was a total beast, dont get me wrong. Claims about his training are legendary. Footlocker champ, Million-time NCAA All-American Runner, one of only two Americans to sub 13 and sub 27 if I'm remembering right.
But internationally and even nationally, as a pro, he didn't have much success. He's kind of like Sydney Maree, ridiculous record-breaking times (nationally) but no great international success. Did he even have any national titles to his name?
Now contrast that with Rupp, 2x Olympic medalist, world major marathon wins and runner-up, like a dozen national titles over various distances, Or Ritz, like a half dozen national titles, multiple Olympic teams, major road race wins, top 3 finishes.
IDK...Rupp and Ritz both had better careers IMO. I bet Solinsky would probably trade those three or four seconds in 5000 M PR for either one of those careers if given the choice.
