With all the uncertainty about the near future of racing, I've decided to focus on improving my endurance. I have my eyes on a solid cross country season or 5k/10k debut on the track.
Background:
I'm currently not super fast, prs are 4:46 for 1600 and 10:30 for 3200, (as well as 29:30 for 8k, so probably definitely better at shorter stuff) and my main goal is to up the mileage and hopefully see substantial improvement.
Today I did 2 x 2 miles at a tempoish effort with 2' jog rest in 11:59 and 11:55 and that got me thinking about trying to get strong enough to run sub 60 for 10 miles in the near future. I was planning on doing frequent tempo type stuff (maybe 15-30 minutes of work around 6 flat pace once a week?) and also upping the mileage (recently boosted it from 50 to 70, which feels good) but I'm not too sure if/what I ought to do for another hard effort. Would it be smart to incorporate some sort of hard running into my long run? Should I be doing some 5k or 10k type intervals here and there?
Also,
What kind of 5k shape do you think is necessary to run 59:59 for 10 miles?
When you ran sub 60 what other times had you recently run?
Any and all comments appreciated :)
