I think Joan should have won!
#1Her times are historically fast.
#2. She was so much better than her competition during that era.
#3. She ran those times in the 1980's. Title 9 happened in 1972 and ushered in the womens sport movement. There were still people around that thought women couldn't run a marathon in the 1980's. Running fast times in that cultural zeitgeist is way harder. She pioneered fast running and that is way harder. Jennie Simpson is good but she is standing on the shoulders of giants who started the womens running movement.
#4. She didn't have a advanced understanding of exercise physiology. Sport science has gotten radically better and every athlete has improved. Running is still running, but modern injury prevention, training and recovery is just better than back then. It's easier to run fast wihout injury now.
#5. She is still fast as hell and running well in her 60's! She has a clear love of the sport.
#6. I read her memoir. She has a section on how she never lost her period while training, which means she always maintained a health calorie balance. She seemed to intuitively eat healthy in a way that supported her body. That is incredible. She seemed to intuitively understand nutrition in ways that most athletes today don't.
#7. She trained in Maine during the winter. That is hard AF.
#8. SHE WON OLYMPIC GOLD!
