Middle-distance is part and parcel of "distance." Just as long-distance is. In running, it's sprint or distance.
And Grete miscalculated and let Joanie go in ‘84.

I disagree.
First, if there are only the two, why the long-acknowledged third category of middle distance?
Second, it is the character of the race that matters. Have you ever seen a slow sit-and-kick marathon or sprint?
Third, the qualifier “middle” does more than make it a certain “type of distance”, just the same as if we spokenof sprints as “short distance”.
While I agree with you that there are two essential and distinct locomotive mechanics that are not walking—ie. sprinting and running—and that the running mechanic is used in both the 1500 and the marathon, I think that the rate of usage of the various energy systems, and especially the character of the race, distinctly separate middle distance from distance, for the purposes of comparing the exploits of two athletes from the two events.
Most Americans that grew up running and went into distance running typically tried everything down to at least the 800m in high school. That's why these distance conversations are usually 800m - up. It's not hard to understand.

What are you TALKING about? You tried to STOP Jenny from advancing .
I wonder how RoJo feels about Ryun beating Shorter?
Wait for the next editorial.
Rojo's explanation for blatant cheating was that he ate tainted beef that night. What a cheater.
Did you actually throw Gault under the bus to excuse your blatant cheating. Man up boy.

Am I the only one who thinks Joanie was as dirty in 83/84/85 as Nick Rogers was in 00/01???
Flash in the pan
What's this about Nick Rogers? Just your personal suspicion, or something more commonly understood in the community. If true, really sucks for Matt Lane....
Also, I find it particularly difficult to compare women runners across generations. There has been such a massive rise in global female participation in the sport. To me, it was a coin flip between Joanie and Jenny, but I ultimately voted for Jenny. Maybe it is because I was 4 years old when Joanie won. Or maybe, it is because I have a bias in favor of people who won medals on the track (though I voted Shorter over Ryun).
