It’s funny how many people seem to be slower. I guess that makes sense for those who are high school and college age, where you were part of a team and training with others and under a coach like it sounds the OP was. It’s practically your job and main responsibility at that age.
For me, I’m late 30s and with normal work and family obligations I could only fit in so much running. With the more flexible work schedule I’ve been able to increase my training and had the ability to get more rest (no more getting up at 5am) to help recovery. My legs and body have felt fresher even with the extra miles.
I mean I’m not back to college level fitness or anything. But I’ve without a doubt dropped my times a decent amount at every distance. Too bad there’s no races anytime soon to truly see how much! While I’m sure the quarantine restrictions will be lessened significantly by the fall, I’m afraid they still may not be allowing the huge gatherings of nonessential activities. So while we can be going back to restaurants (with perhaps diminished seating capacity) I have doubts mass sports will be opened up.... so who knows how long before we can race again (no, I don’t count virtual races!).
