Texas hit a new high of 8,076 new cases today. That is up from 6,975 from yesterday. Drive up testing centers are still turning away lots of people and you cannot get an appointment to be tested for over a week. Testing supplies are running short and labs are now prioritizing testing symptomatic cases while delaying all others by a couple of days. So, the current growth in cases is not being properly measured due to the lack of testing (even though the governor promised that testing capacity would be expanded to meet demand after reopening).
The latest restrictions (no bars, some mask requirements to enter businesses in most big counties) will help, but there are still a lot of people who have been infected that do not know it and have spread the virus further. There are also a lot of people who will end up in the hospital. A Dr. from Houston said on the news the other day that people are showing up to the ER in much worse shape than when the virus first hit. People are waiting too long and trying to ride it out at home.
The hospitals are already beyond their normal ICU capacity. San Antonio is getting hit the hardest with Houston also getting hit hard. Houston is projected to exceed their surge capacity in two weeks. That will mean setting up tent hospitals for additional capacity. I would bet that two weeks is too optimistic as everyone will be blowing each other up and crashing their cars over the 4th of July weekend.
