Some possible reasons (no idea if they’re right, just guessing):
-Most other states have 4-6 classes.
-Some other MN sports have more than 2 classes.
When the third class is added, there will likely be a section realignment; there may be a change in section 6AA (some of the top programs such as Wayzata, Edina, Hopkins, and Eden Prairie being split up). We’ve seen some years where 4 of the top 5 teams (or even 5 of the top 6) are all in 6AA, and 2 of them got to race at the state meet. In 2015, Wayzata/Edina boys didn’t make the state meet but qualified for NXN.
In 2014, Edina didn’t make the state meet but auto qualified for NXN and placed 9th there.
