This finish is what I thought of when I was watching the battle for 2nd through 4th at the Atlanta Trials. I kept expecting Leonard Korir to kick past Jake Riley and Abdi since, even though there was separation, Korir never fell back completely.
Speedy Jose Gomez lays waste to Salazar in the last 250 in the 1983 Prefontaine Classic 10,000.
This is the first time I've seen clips from either event. I watched the women's 1984 Olympic Trials Marathon, but missed the men's Trials. I was 14 or 15, and not a runner until a year later, but was already becoming a running fan.
To save all the trouble, the only time you'll see Salazar outkick anyone is Boston 82.
He really, really should have gone the ultra route a lot earlier in his career.
Is this what drove him to start taking exogenous testosterone, or was he already in it?

He did outkick Virgin a few times and until the wheels fell off in early 1983, he was the world's best marathoner.
You're probably joking about him running ultras. He did run Comrades, but that was long after his competitive career was over and he ran over 100 races during his career that were more impressive.
What year were you at SDSU?

I graduated in '81.

People forget how great Salazar was.
What would be the reaction on these boards if a 23 year old American set a World Record* on the New York Marathon course without pacesetters? Then followed that up the next Spring by winning Boston and then setting American records at 5k and 10k approximately two months later -- all before the age of 24.

And career over by ‘84. He was an impressive runner, quite a relentless warrior. His obsession ended in overtraining that ended up being his own demise.
* still an arrogant prik nevertheless.
Can't believe Salazar ran a 13:11 5,000 with that form. Granted his body was already deteriorating by that point.

Thanks. I know about that race, but just watched that finish for the first time. Beardsley had zero kick. I'm 50, and the only race I saw him race in real time was the 1984 Olympics. People younger than me on this board know about his lack of kick reputation, but haven't actually seen him run. Thanks to Youtube, we now can.

That was the first thing that came to mind when I was watching the 1983 Prefontaine video. At 6:04, the commentator says, "One I've noticed about Alberto is that he seems to be putting on a bit of muscle, he's doing intensive weight training."

Exactly.
Now people get excited when somebody is 22nd in the OT.
Sorry, what was Pfitzinger's alma mater? I'm sure it's an outstanding educational institution...

Dunno. You tell me.
I looked it up. "Pfitz" is a graduate of the same school that Max King, Boston Marathon champ Jon Anderson, and Sage Canaday attended: Cornell University.

How do you run 13:11 with a deteriorating body? That makes no sense at all.
Salazar always had awful form. Running himself to the ground did not deteriorate it.

i watched the first video and i agree. his form looks terrible, but the guy digs real deep for willpower.
he'd have won if only he hadn't glanced back every few steps
Didn’t he outkick Gomez in one of his NY wins?
