Am I hispanic?

    I'm currently a junior who will be applying to college next year. My mom is white, and my dad is ethinically Chinese-Mexican, meaning his parents immigrated from China to Mexico. When applying to colleges, I have to fill out what race group I belong in. My guidance counselor recommends that I fill out Hispanic, because of my father's heritage and that it would give me an advantage because of affirmative action. I frequently visit family in Mexico, and celebrate my Mexican heritage. Would it be alright for me to fill out the Hispanic box, or should I stick with filling out mixed race, or white?

    If it's a significant part of your life, and it does sound like it is, then it's okay. You've got family in Mexico and you visit them. Close enough.

    Mixed race might be another option (Anglo-Asian-Hispanic), which might be just as useful under some circumstances. It's a harder box to check, but maybe more interesting in an essay, and it might be a fuller description of your lived identity.

    Would have said "mixed," then thought about my "Ancestry.com" results that showed up like 85% English, Irish and only 5% Latino, even though I was born in Panama, and all my mom's people were from Puerto Rico and Spain.

    In some instances, Hispanic people are considered “white” also. Do you know more info about your mother’s background besides being “white?”

    My father is adopted. What block do I check? I have always hated to have to out myself in a box because I am basing it on appearance. But then, I guess that is what the entire sill drill is about anyway even though I thought that we could not discriminate.
