Magness was one of the lead whistle blowers against Salazar and Rupp, about as critical as it can get. He seemed to think Rupp was on testosterone medication since high school, per the original 2014-2015 BBC documentary-.
Magness is also pretty darn close with Mike Smith, they've done a few podcasts together on Steve's YouTube channel and have alluded to their friendship.
I have to believe in his decision making process to coach Galen, Smith consulted Magness. Presumably, Magness strongly urged Smith to stay away from Rupp, probably giving him all the dirty little secrets that aren't even public.
Yet, Smith ultimately decided to coach Rupp.
Can we conclude that Magness' dirty little secrets on Salazar and Rupp weren't convincing and damning enough to make Smith want to distance himself from the situation? If so, it makes me think Rupp and Salazar were never doing anything that scandalous after all. Smith has everything to lose. He is the head of a NCAA dynasty. He would never risk destroying his reputation and job by working with an athlete he thought might receive a doping ban or be completely exposed at some point.
Thoughts? Does the fact Smith decided to work with Rupp say something significant about the "inside" information on the Salazar situation? Is it not as scandalous as we might be led to think? Salazar ban could be overturned?
