went grocery shopping in seattle tonight with the wife and it is the first time i've seen more than just a random person wearing masks. Maybe about one out of every 12 people were wearing a mask.

It will be forced on you next week no doubt.
Maybe time for a discussion on how to cope with wearing a mask while running.
I've heard everyone's wearing them in Czech Republic. True?
Yes it's true, even in the countryside. Even the homeless bums are having to wear them.
There are no restrictions on running here, other than you have to wear a mask or cover your face even when exercising outdoors.
I'd rather have to cover my face while running than not be able to run at all.
Have to say, the females here are still 100 x more attractive than Western women, even with their faces partly covered.
Should you use the handkerchief like how Galen Rupp used at the Boston 2018 marathon where he looks like a robber? How about bringing out your training mask, while fitting in with the crowd and get your VO2max elevated at the same time!
I'm all for it, if they were actually available.
The ballgag is a better look and more appropriate for most.

Right now most non-Asian Americans feel silly wearing those masks in public but it's looking like that's going to change
Hardloper, when did you finally come around? Last I saw you and BW were tag-teaming how this was just like swine flu.
No masks are available & none are coming, since hospitals don’t even have enough.
What happened to the media propaganda declaring masks don't work? Supposedly, the virus being such a puny virus that a mask would be useless. Over and over and over the media telling us not to use masks- not even the vulnerable. And we are supposed to trust the media and the so called "experts" who all have a political agenda?

It would keep you from getting other people sick even if you don't have symptoms, and might prevent you from touching your face.
Just throwing out a prediction. I'd rather not wear one but I think there will be increasing peer pressure and maybe evidence that it worked in other places.
This explains why other people might want me to wear a mask. It doesn't explain why I would wear a mask. A benefit accruing to person A will not incentivize person B to take action.
Sure. In the completely selfish case. If that's your ethics, then no mask for you.
Only argument worth considering under said ethics would be whether you wearing a mask, thus reducing spread helps prevent overrunning of the hospitals or other issues and economic damage that ultimately spill over to you as a taxpayer and citizen.
If that doesn't sound viable or realistic concern to you...then again, under those ethics, no mask.
Most however, gain benefit wearing a mask to protect others. That benefit comes in the form of dopamine and positive emotions from knowing they are helping others.
Yes, I was under the impression that hardloper was a denier as well.
Since I help a friend with rental properties, I already had masks and gloves.
One unanticipated benefit of wearing a mask and gloves is that people in grocery stores give you a wide berth. I've noticed that the difference in social distancing is significantly greater with the mask. I shopped early this morning when Walmart was nearly empty. More than once, someone would turn into my aisle, see me wearing a mask, and turn around and leave.
I don't want to wear one. Though if everyone else is wearing one and I can buy one, I probably would. I think its more important that health care workers have masks than us average citizens.

How did you get that impression?

Unless it's an N95, the mask doesn't keep the wearer from getting sick, so why would I start wearing a mask?
Please Watch. This is incredibly practical and helpful. Empowering about how you can stay safe.
The mask is mostly a reminder not to touch your face, not to prevent you from getting airborne droplets.

As the other poster said, it seemed like you were in league with the notorious bad wigins.

That's what I think will change. Citizens don't need the same type of mask that a healthcare worker requires so supply isn't an issue. Healthcare workers burn through a huge number of masks very quickly. It would be better if citizens prevent them from spreading in the first place. It will be shown to be an underrated factor in South Korea and Japan containing the spread.
Unless someone holds me down to strap it on, I think you miscounted by at least 1 person.
- Not propaganda, just bad phrasing. The virus isn’t airborne, so to protect yourself you don’t necessarily need an N95. The mask prevents spread from a PATIENT (who is still contagious).
- I work in a hospital, and I’m currently taking care of our cohorted COVID patients. (They are a majority of the patients I’m seeing now). We have enough masks and gloves for now, but are guarding them like crazy. We have extra supplies locked away and when accessed, they’re signed out to someone so we don’t waste it.
So yes... I am pretty pissed that I go to the grocery store and healthy people are wearing masks so they don’t get infected with COVID from contagious broccoli.

That's not what scientists have been saying for the last 2 months.

I'm glad some hospitals have enough masks and gloves.
We DO NOT at all. We're having to reuse them, not just for another patient and another patient, but for another shift, and another shift...
