I want to try an experiment. Whenever a thread is started about COVID on this board, it inevitably devolves into two sides talking past each other, each dug into their position. One side believes that COVID is absolutely a serious threat that must be dealt with by whatever means necessary, and the other side believes that the threat of COVID is being completely blown out of proportion. I believe we can all agree that probably 90% of posters on the board fall into one of those two categories.
The thing is, we all lack data to adequately defend our positions (either of them). Not enough data is out there to draw definite conclusions. Every one of us is guessing. More data will become available in the coming weeks and months.
The real question I think each and every one of us on both sides of the argument should ask ourselves is what would it take to convince us that the other side is correct? What evidence would actually change our minds? And if you don't have the potential to change your mind under any circumstances, are you being reasonable?
Those who have read my posts know that I fall into the first category - I do believe COVID is a serious threat, and I agree with the recommendations of the CDC on social distancing, hyper focus on hygiene, etc.
That being said - I do have a set of potential circumstances that would change my mind, and interestingly, reading these boards has played a part in helping me form them. They are:
-If some sort of test of COVID antibodies was developed, a large percentage of the population (say ~1%) was tested, and a huge percentage (say 20%) were found to have had COVID at some point in time without showing symptoms.
-OR-
-We get to a month from now, and some of the things many of us are worried about don't materialize, such as NYC's temporary morgue is not needed, or on average the weekly number of deaths due to flu continues to exceed the weekly number of deaths to COVID by a significant number (say 50%). Additionally, the percentage of hospitalization rate of diagnosed COVID patients falls significantly (say to 1%).
That's what it would take to change my mind.
So what I'm going to ask you to do in this thread is
1) Tell us which side you're on.
2) Tell us what it would take for you to change your mind.
Can you dig it?
