3 weeks ago i rolled my ankle pretty good on a trail. loud pop (thought my ankle broke for about 10 seconds before i came to my senses), went down hard. after sitting around a bit i realized it was just a sprain and kinda half hobbled through the end of the run which amounted to another 9 or so miles of running super slowly and carefully.
it swelled pretty bad and was a nightmare for getting around for a few days but eventually the pain was manageable. bruising appeared near the bottom of my foot on the outside, at the top of the foot where my sock ended, and down at my toes (which i assumed was just the swelling/bruise following gravity). until recently when the pain is only present when i go beyond a certain range of motion, the absolute worst pain came from when i would have the ankle either level or elevated for a time, then bring it down to ground level and try to walk (think, getting out of bed after sleeping, etc).
now, the 'swelling' is gone. meaning the soft, smushy swelling but my ankle is still ~2.5x the size of my other one, it's just hard and slightly sensitive to touch in some places. i've been able to walk okay for a while now as long as i don't go too far side to side with it. front-back range of motion is probably 75% of normal, side-side range of motion is probably 40-50% of normal before pain kicks in. it can easily bear my weight and i can do gentle on-legged hops on it (as long as i don't accidentally move it too much).
So what do it do, give it more time? is this something that needs intervention? i'm about to go nuts.
