Spencer, based on the video's at least, does not seem like he's all in for the running. which I guess is fine for him. His youtube franchise is certainly an impressive accomplishment that will probably give him better opptys in his non running career in media marketing etc.
Have thought for a long time that his training lacked mileage, serious weight training/pliometrics etc and he also seems to have a really poor diet & sleep habits. In general the Gtwn program seems pretty non scientific by modern standards but i'm not a running coach so i'm not sure how it really compares to a place like stanford, for ex.--however I really don't know if its the program or spencer's effort.
I was an athlete at Gtwn but not a runner there, though i was friends with a couple of the guys and went on a couple of team runs with them for fun. Casual observation was that a guy like Gregorek was way more focused/intense than a Spencer or any of the other guys on the team. I'm not equating the two talent wise-i'd be reasonably confident that spencer does not have gregorek's top end aerobic talent, though might have similar speed.
I suspect spencer could do better with a better routine--there was another Gtwn guy who made huge improvement from running spencer like times at Gtwn after 1 year training on the west coast + germany (Amos Bartlemeyer). How much better could Spencer do I really don't know and if he doesn't really have the talent/drive to make the oly/ world champs team level not sure the tradeoff is worth it versus being only running focused versus the you tube channel.
