"Kallin Khan made a life-changing decision this week because of the coronavirus epidemic spreading across the country.
The former University of Iowa runner and his fiancee Hannah Carolus decided last Wednesday to leave their apartment in Portland, Oregon, and move to rural Treynor in southwest Iowa. The couple were afraid that Oregon would follow neighbor California's lead and enforce mandatory stay-at-home restrictions.
And if that happened and the virus lingered well into the summer, the restriction would have put their July 18 wedding in Iowa in jeopardy.
Instead, the couple is enjoying the sprawling farm of Hannah's parents while preparing for their big day. For Kallin, the change has also given him the freedom to continue his ultramarathon training unabated.
Khan, a 2018 U of I graduate, is coming off two outstanding ultramarathon races this month. On March 1 at Heckscher State Park in East Islip, New York, Khan won the 2020 USATF 50K National Championship. Khan defeated fellow former Iowa City resident Matt Dewald by less than two minutes in 2 hours, 57 minutes, 51 seconds to earn an automatic qualifying spot for Team USA at the International Association of Ultrarunners 50K World Championships in Aqaba, Jordan, this November.
Then, less than two weeks later, Khan finished third at the USATF 50 Mile Trail Championship in Auburn, California, on March 14. Khan overcame wind, cold and rain to finish his first 50-mile race."
Could be a bit of an overreaction, but better than that guy who ran a 50k around his massage tables or the guy who ran a marathon on his balcony!
