The YMCA is going to keep taking my money.
As I recall -- I barely glanced at the message -- my local YMCA said that it was seeking some sort of determination that a substantial portion of the membership fees would be tax-deductible, presumably because it's a religious organization that is not currently providing goods or services in exchange for the donation. (I think it's absurd that organizations like the YMCA are provided with such tax advantages. Commercial gyms are dicey enough as investments or businesses without competition from purportedly non-profit "religious" organizations.)
The Y has distanced itself from being a religious organization---thus the move to being the "Y". It is organized as a nonprofit. Planet Fitness could organized itself in that way as well.
I am going to break some news to you almost every running club is likely a non-profit. They put on races and compete with for profit groups. So I guess running clubs should stop putting on races.
Also, many, many hospitals are organized as non-profits.
I'm not sure that a lot of the Y fees can be classified as a donation. On top of that fewer and fewer people would be able to even take advantage of it being classified as a donation on taxes.
