You probably could have broken 4:00 without that anchor on your wrist.

Oh I forgot the best part. Watch battery was dead and I didn't want to go to the drugstore just for that.

Certainly win the MacGyver award for the week.

Would love to see you try and get through airport security with that on your wrist. Amazing.

That was my first though. It looks extremely suspicious.
AJ's right, too. Each battery easily weighs more than the watch.

Sunday wrapped up my spring marathon training. With no more races to train for, I decided to hit 10 @ MP and call it a cycle. This went VERY, VERY WELL. Here are the splits - 5:36, 5:34, 5:31, 5:35, 5:31, 5:37 (Slowed down after nearly tripping over a curb), 5:35, 5:35, 5:34, 5:33.
That went well, you say? Unreal, man!!!!!
I had to laugh at your comment about slowing when tripping over the curb. Been there!! That feeling that you're absolutely nailing it and then.... Ohhhh Noooooo.... then... Whew, I'm fine. Great work!

Nice mile! I really like the 10x400 @ 75 with 200 rest as a prep. You must have had a ton of confidence going into the race after that.
Hey Guys. Hope everyone is staying healthy.
I was considering running a mile TT this weekend. I thought it would be useful to get a sense of what kind of wheels my aging body has as I look to transition to some faster races (5k/10k) once this global pandemic begins to recede.
I was curious as to what you think a good target would be for me. I headed out to the track today and did 3 up @ 7:30, 10x400 w/ 200 jog in 73/75/75/75/74/74/73/73/73/71, 2 down. Rest ended up being about 1:1. Overall this felt like maybe 80-90% effort and started to get hard towards the last 2.
I was hoping to maybe run under 5 minutes. Does this seem doable based on this workout?

Yes. Get it worm. Staying busy?

Physically, no doubt, it’s just really hard to do a solo mile time trial.
For reference, see Guy Broman’s 4:58 after a similar indicator workout (nice run, by the way), although you presumably won’t have the benefit of an Apocalypse Watch.

Definitely physically doable. With 1 min rest 10x400 is a perfect time indicator in my view and if anything most can go a half-second or even faster per lap in a competitive race. You didn’t have much more rest, so I’d posit you’re in 4:55 shape or so, but in a time trial it’s tougher obviously. Aim for no faster than 37 on the nose the first 209, and settle in because if you miss it will be because a too-hard first lap and a rough third lap as a result.
Following up, you guys are inspiring me to probably do a TT of my own. Just ordered some Streak LT4 and once I get them I’ll break them in and head to the East River track. Might do a 1500 or a 3000, though to keep it interesting.
Thanks for the feedback everyone. Hopefully I can emulate what Guy was able to pull off.
I needed something to look forward to!
Last question, what do you think is the bare minimum someone needs to be able to run a mile in to break 16 in a 5k? 4:45?

I ran 4:46 indoors then a few weeks later 15:58 in what a skeptical Slo-twitch calls a “5k.”
I’d say 4:50 at the absolute extreme. Have to be an aerobic monster. Can remember in college we had a guy who I don’t think could break 4:40 and he ran 15:10. He had no speed at all.
Fair enough. That said, presumably a more conservative conversion would be required for us mere mortals who don't run 100+ miles a week every week.

.. .the Streak LT is NOT a marathon shoe .... Just a PSA to everyone
Oh I know, the response on a thread here was that taking them in a race past even 4 miles could ravage the legs. Wanted a shoe for road miles, 5Ks and maybe a random track TT, and for $56 couldn’t pass it up.
