Don't get your hopes up too early. Even if they find a treatment, it has to be tested and produced. That will take 1-1.5 years.
In times of an emergency that timeline can be reduced to under 6 months.
No wealthy person will die because they will have access to the drugs.
Well, if Elon Musk says so....
Of course antivirals work.
They do not need the same testing as new drugs because they have safety tests already and only are used in extreme cases where further risk subordinates safety concerns.
This drug gives very harsh side effects.
HIV antivirals and the other unapproved antiviral also work.
Increasing supply of the two approved drugs would not take long.
never click on a 'business insider' story
that said, there is a massive effort on to find an approved medicine that helps fight this thing.
Could work out, and that would be good. The problem is dosage...if the dose needed is larger than has already been approved for us...then the drug is useless.
Except that it will be in short supply, just like masks, gloves, etc.
Chloroquine is being used in trials in China right now, they are reporting good results.
We have hydroxychloroquine in the US, a closely related drug. It is commonly used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, etc. Hospitals are using if off -label to treat COVId-19. Thus far there is still plenty of it available although that may change. It’s a cheap, generic drug.
Remdesevir, and antiviral Med, is also showing some promise but not FDA approved or widely available yet
The study from Marseille is flawed in many ways (randomization is flawed and date of inclusion into to trial was used instead of begin of illness - group who got the drug was probably further progressed in their disease and remember that most of the patients get well without drugs; viral replication in the throat is no suitable end-point and so on).
I'm not saying that chloroquine doesn't work, just that this trial doesn't proof anything.

Is that you AOC? Wish I had my Amazon job now!
Don't we already have a cure since the majority of people recover and continue with life?

Trump said the anti-malaria drug will be made available almost immediately.

Nothing Trump says can be trusted. That man spills over with lies, obfuscations, misinformation, and narcissistic ignorance.
In case it's not clear, we already have the drug available and are using it, see my post above. It's off label but nobody care because it's generic and cheap.

This country can't mass produce a viable vaccine in 3 months once it has been tested?

They need to come up with something soon or people will stop listening to their fear mongering about bodies piling up and case numbers spiking when everyone they know is fine

China completed first testing of this a month ago. It is not a cure. It helps reduce symptoms and recovery time.
