Most persistent/scary cold I've had in years right now on Day 21. Started with mostly fever body aches, then a few days in would get periods of shortness of breath. Walking down the street felt as hard as running. Weird thing, though, as I took OTC medicines, I'd improve for awhile only to have symptoms return later in the day or the next day. Meantime, wife and a kid also got sick, although they had more coughing while I didn't have that.
About a week in, went to see a doc after a day of tough breathing, which as a masters runner, including marathons, is NOT normal for me . Flu test negative. Lungs/PulseOx sounded fine. Vitals good. Blood drawn, nothing out of the ordinary. Conclusion: an unknown virus. Breathlessness attributed to stress, especially with all that's going on. Advised to drink plenty of fluids, keep taking meds and catch up on sleep.
After a day of improvement and feeling like I was finally getting over it, I went for a typical weekend run. It was a struggle but not horrible and typical when not running for awhile (typically I work out 4-5 times a week, including several runs). That night, though, got a sore throat and fever returned. Over the next few days were a rollercoaster of feeling better/feeling worse, except this time shortness of breath included chest discomfort and a lot of drainage.
On one day where I was feeling on the upswing, tried running briefly but it was a big mistake. Felt 10x worse after. My lungs felt like they've aged 10 years. Continuing with OTC meds, the fever stopped but other symptoms seem to worsen and it became harder to sleep, waking up several times a night. Called doc back, they wanted to see me again and this was just after the area announced its first COVID-19 case and schools and businesses also began to close/shut down.
This time, they were dressed in the full protective gear. The nurse was visibly sweating/appeared not to want to be there as she checked my vitals, which again were decent/lungs seemed clear. Doc (different than the last visit) says the sore throat wasn't strep. Can't rule out coronavirus, either, Doc adds, but because my symptoms are considered "mild", I can't get a COVID-19 test, which are very limited here at the moment. Doc tells me to hunker down at home until I'm symptom free for a week. Says a test at this point doesn't matter since community spread likely is present/expresses concerns that things are about to get worse/says at this point it's not worth telling anyone I may have had contact recently that I may have the virus. Acute cases are the focus, now. Says I should get better.
But now, a few days later, I'm still on the roller-coaster where sometimes I start to feel better but then get tired and/or chest tightness. Wife and a kid still sick, too, just lingering. We're all struggling, anyway, as our life is no longer the same and it's unclear when that will change, even if we get better. Still, I'm worried I'll get worse or that my wife will. Long-term, I'm worried this is like TB or lyme where maybe you don't quite get rid of it. I think my running fitness has helped me endure whatever this is so far, but I also feel like I'm slowly getting worse. I don't care about my running at the moment. I just want to get better. Wake up, folks, this sh*t is real.
