Jeez, are these coaches and team physicians no better than Catholic priests? Just sickening to have this garbage coming out every week now.
Few coaches of young adults and kids do it for purely altruistic reasons. Most of them are perverts who simply prey on the young and impressionable. And young people who are trying to get their foot in the door are more easy to manipulate than older seasoned adults.
Pervert coaches exploit the uncertainty and the aspirations of young athletes who feel that their relationship and standing with the coach is tantamount to their advancement in the sport. Also exploit naivety and undeveloped self esteem that young people have who are less sure of themselves than older folks.
Whoa! Slow down there speed racer.
I get a lot of things out of coaching, but sexual gratification isn’t one of those things.
Do I enjoy the competition? Yes. Do I enjoy the interactions with motivated young people? Absolutely! Do I form strong bonds with some athletes that last for decades? Yes! Does this mean that I’m some sort of predator? No way!
Most coaches I know are the same way when it comes to the coach athlete relationship. Just like most teachers are good people an sovare most priests and Boy Scout leaders.
Of course their are creeps and weirdos among us and perhaps some are drawn to the profession because of the ability to groom teens, but the statement above is so far out of the reality I’ve lived for the last 30 years that I just couldn’t let it slide.
