Yes, the US and world track season is close to being over. The Olympics will most likely be cancelled within the next month.
the NBA is suspended and is also more popular than track and field, so this isn't much news or surprising. unless you're getting paid to run, then who cares. there are more important things going on at this time
they should postpone but IOC has been determined to carry on---at least now they will heed WHO advice and the big challenge are qualification events which are a lot sooner and more likely to be postponed and lead to really compressed schedules if Olympics still start in late July....
He's got the whole world in His hands....
Stop worrying
IOC is living in their Ivory Tower and ignoring the medical truth. Even if Japan gets a handle on this in a few weeks are they going to open their doors to the world of athletes and visitors that run a high risk of reigniting the situation and making it ten times worse? No!
Even if Olympics were to foolishly attempt to stay on track for late July start there is almost no way Eugene will be able to host. The area in and around is exploding with Coronavirus cases and the ban on big events will still be in place in June. Logistically there is no way to hold this meet on time anywhere else.
Some of the latest news reports have been quickly revising the stories.
As many of us have been saying all along, it turns out that most of the supposed cv19 deaths have been misdiagnosis from other causes.
The overall death rate based on all causes has not changed.
Yeah, it sucks that so many people are losing seasons and majour competitions, but that's not really the important thing right now. Like you said, this stupid virus is spreading like wildfire. The real danger isn't to sports, it's to immunocompromised people (people with other conditions, the elderly, etc.). Right now what matters is getting this mess under control and protecting the people who could actually die from the virus. Cancellations are a world-wide issue, so once everything calms down the officials will work something out. We can always run later, but if we wait longer to do anything to prevent this pandemic from getting worse the situation can only escalate. It's better to do this now, stay safe everyone.

Suppose this virus keeps mutating and it ushers in a new chapter in human history and a new normal.
Yes, I know this is just speculation but sometimes there are pivotal events that change the course of human history in unforeseen ways.
Nope. Not worried. Here are main options.
1. Quarantine works and disease is contained. (SARS, MERS)
2. Containment does not work. Thousands or millions die. Most survivors have immunity and disease dies out from lack of host. (Spanish flu).
3 It mutates in unprecedented ways and basically everyone dies and human history is over. (Obviously, no examples)
It can't mutate and become pandemic continuously. At some point it has to stop being novel, either because we contained it and it died out, we got immunity and it died out, or everybody died and it died out.
Sure, it could fall into a category like the normal flu, chicken pox, measles, herpes, hiv and other viruses that survive in the population. In those situations, life would go back to normal as well.
Possible that the Olympics are cancelled but we have no Trials? Team picked by a committee?
