Exactly. It's business as usual for the Big East basketball tournament as well. If the city were really concerned about public health, and covid-19 is really as virulent as the scaremongers make it out to be, then the NYC subway system should be shut down; over 4 million people use it every day, spewing who-knows-what on each other in close airtight quarters. That's okay, yet a road race is somehow a menace?
Right on.

Can anyone from the San Diego confirm if the San Diego half this weekend is worth traveling for? Such as weather, competition and course. I already have the days off from work so just trying to make the most of it with hopefully finding somewhere decent to race.
Thanks!
That depends, are you a male between 45 and 49? If so then it's a horrible event, you definitely don't want to come.
UAE already announced that pretty much everything is canceled: sporting events, concerts, etc.
UAE10km in NYC on March 28.

I’m not an idiot I’m completely right. You watch six months from now they will regret doing all of this. People are now being incredibly racist against people from other countries, the same people that once defended them. People are basically only thinking of themselves “I don’t want to get sick so cancel the stupid race” If you are afraid of getting sick then just don’t go to the race. And New Flash, it’s not just a stupid race to many people. Running is one of those sports where you may never get back to the point you were once at. You never know with it. Taking away opportunities has also caused horrible economic damage that is far worse then anything a virus can cause.
Are you saying the Chinese defended the Americans?

Im going to guess you don't live in NYC. People need the subway to commute and earn a living. The city has already discouraged people from using the subway if they don't need to, but shutting down the subway is the last thing the city would do.
People don't need a half marathon PR.
While I would agree that the subway is a much larger concern for the spread of the virus, it is also a necessity for a lot of people and the NYC half marathon is far from a necessity.
Furthermore, the city should be focused on necessity and allocating manpower and infrastructure towards a non-necessity like a half marathon just isn't a good use of resource right now.
I was racing, I was comfortable with the risk, and I am bummed about the cancellation, but it makes sense.
We don't know at this point what is the right and what is the wrong thing to do.
Letting the NYC subway to operate is probably spreading the virus much more than any running event.

Who says that people need more to earn living than they need to finish a race? The text above somehow encourages even sick people to go to workplace and to spread the virus. Last thing what is important in serious times is money. If I was going to die I would rather have that PB than millions in the bank.
Glad I got in the lottery last year instead of this year...
I can believe NYRR cancelled the race, but I cannot believe they did it before NYC or NY state announced further measures to limit large crowds, etc...15,000 people trained to run a half marathon...that's the healthiest crowd you could be a part of.
It's just an unknown risk right now that's the part that sucks. I believe in 6 months we will be regretting the panic that is sending us into a recession, but right now, we just don't know.
The overwhelming majority of people infected simply have mild cold-like symptoms, if any symptoms at all. The actual number of those infected is likely much higher than we know, which would also drastically decrease the death rate everyone is so worked up about.
But everyone infected is contagious, and the threat of wide scale spreading of the virus to those with compromised immune systems and anyone (even healthy people) over 60 or so is too risky to ignore.
But in 90-180 days, I think life will be back to normal.
Remember the Tommy Lee Jones quote in Men in Black: "A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it."

This doesn't encourage sick people to use the subway go to the workplace. I specifically said that people were discouraged from using the subway (and more specifically sick people were discouraged from using the subway and going to work). But there are healthy people who need to earn a living to get by will still need to use the subway. Most of the people on the subway aren't putting millions in the bank, they are just getting by and that's why the subway is staying open.
You aren't going to die. And based on your density, you probably also won't earn millions. So you have nothing to worry about.

You guess wrong. My point was about about the wildly inconsistent manner in which certain events and activities are being restricted or cancelled, yet others are allowed to continue. 25,000 people running in the open air over a 13.1 mile course are deemed a hazard, yet it's acceptable for 18,000 to sit in the closed confines of Madison Square Garden for Knick and Ranger Games and the Big East tournament. By the "logic" of the 1/2 Marathon being cancelled, the St. Patrick's Day parade should get the axe as well.
And if it's really survival we're talking about, no one "needs" the subway, which has millions of people crammed together in airtight subterranean cannisters. They need air, water, shelter, and food.
Months from now people will feel as foolish about this panic as they did about the non-event that was Y2K.
Agree on the parade and sporting events at MSG. Don't agree with you on the subway. If things get substantially worse I could see the subway closing, but my only point (and it almost seems like you agree) is that less necessary things like parades and sporting events should be cancelled. I would put the necessity of the subway higher than the necessity of a half marathon.
Its more of an X/Y axis type of situation. X axis is risk. Y axis is necessity. Think of an upward sloping line (the closure line) and if things fall on the left side of that line (necessity offsets risk) they stay open, if they fall on the right side of the line (risk offsets necessity) they close.
In my mind while the subway is very risky (far on the risk spectrum) on the axis, the necessity would offset this risk (particularly in the context of advice minimize usage of the subway, particularly for sick people). Necessity is somewhat fixed, but more people contracting the virus could shift this further out on the risk spectrum, and thereby necessitate a closure.
A half marathon would be quite low on the risk spectrum, but almost nil on the y axis, thereby deeming it a good candidate to shut down.

Deblasio
To the 23 year old millennial ... we need more like you. Most your age are simply idiots just thinking they are entitled.
Do yourself a favor and look up the term “Normalcy Bias.” I don’t think you realize how big of a situation this really is.
All you NYC and other-canceled-half-marathon runners: come run the Bath Half this weekend. Book one of these suddenly cheap transatlantic flights. ₤17,000 in prize money and a decent field.

The shamrock in Portland looks like a good alternative but on their website they have a warning that they are monitoring the virus.. it’s just a gamble at this point because you could fly all the way there and they could cancel the race on Saturday.. this is unfortunate
Gov. Brown just announced a statewide ban on activities of 250+ people. I'm guessing Shamrock will announce the cancellation tomorrow.
