FINALLY NYRR made the right call.
FINALLY NYRR made the right call.
Told you earlier it was canceled
Smart move they had to
So messed up that they are cancelling events left and right. This is so sick and taking opportunities away from people that worked incredibly hard for them. My heart goes out to all the runners who worked incredibly hard and trained their ass off only for their event to be cancelled
They're canceling the event to try and mitigate the effects of a serious pandemic? I'd rather not race than put anyone with a compromised immune system in danger of losing their life.
Hopefully the following week's UAE10km will not be cancelled.
This is due to social media panic and the psychological principle of people jumping on bandwagon to panic. I am 23 years old and I grew up with social media but I recognize how ridiculous it is to panic over this virus. The economic impact of people panicking and cancelling events are far worse then anything this virus can do. I feel awful for all the NCAA and high school athletes that may lose their senior season because of unnecessary public panic.
Damn this sucks, this was my peak race..
Has anyone had any luck finding a replacement half marathon that is this Sunday?
Thanks
Its unsafe to run outside at this event. However its safe to attend a Knicks game inside.
Its all about money. The city could care less about health.
Race day reg at New Bedford 1/2 in MA is still on I think
Scratch that, it is cancelled as well
The shamrock in Portland looks like a good alternative but on their website they have a warning that they are monitoring the virus.. it’s just a gamble at this point because you could fly all the way there and they could cancel the race on Saturday.. this is unfortunate
I’m 11 weeks into a 12 week build and feel I’m in PR shape for the NYC Half. This has been one of the best builds I’ve ever had in my racing life and I’ve been counting days to the NYC Half.
I am glad they cancelled. The risks are far too high for all involved.
To the 23 year old millennial ... we need more like you. Most your age are simply idiots just thinking they are entitled.
I’m not an idiot I’m completely right. You watch six months from now they will regret doing all of this. People are now being incredibly racist against people from other countries, the same people that once defended them. People are basically only thinking of themselves “I don’t want to get sick so cancel the stupid race” If you are afraid of getting sick then just don’t go to the race. And New Flash, it’s not just a stupid race to many people. Running is one of those sports where you may never get back to the point you were once at. You never know with it. Taking away opportunities has also caused horrible economic damage that is far worse then anything a virus can cause.

Yeah, Portland has their head in the sand. You know how many people travel to Seattle to Portland weekly? Don't run it. Covid-2019 spreading event.
Can anyone from the San Diego confirm if the San Diego half this weekend is worth traveling for? Such as weather, competition and course. I already have the days off from work so just trying to make the most of it with hopefully finding somewhere decent to race.
Thanks!

Would you give up 1/20th of your own salary so flippantly? What kind of dumbaśs with a comprised immune system shows up to a road race with a Coronavirus outbreak anyway?

This is so dangerously wrong.
This virus kills 1% of the people it infects, and NONE OF US have immunity. Not you, not me, not your parents, not your grandparents. The more people who get it, the more people end up in the hospital. The more people in the hospital, the more strain there is on the system as a whole - meaning that not only people with COVID-19, but also regular folks with other illnesses who need treatment can't get it.
We need to slow the spread. Best way to do this is to prevent situations where large numbers of people come in contact with each other and then disperse to other areas. Large races are just the kind of thing we need to halt so that we can slow the virus down and spread out the eventual cases over a longer period of time so that our health care system can respond and get people treated, both for COVID-19 and everything else.

Exactly. It's business as usual for the Big East basketball tournament as well. If the city were really concerned about public health, and covid-19 is really as virulent as the scaremongers make it out to be, then the NYC subway system should be shut down; over 4 million people use it every day, spewing who-knows-what on each other in close airtight quarters. That's okay, yet a road race is somehow a menace?
