After my breakthrough @chimarathon this year @djritzenhein and I talked about what I would need to do in order to make the Olympic team on Feb 29th. He told me I would have to pour my heart into this race like I’ve never done before. He warned me that when you do this, that if you come up short and do not make the team it would be one of the most painful moments of my life. But if I was to do this and if I made the team then it would be a feeling like nothing I have ever known before.
I knew Dathan was right. I knew I was scared to truly care about something so much than you can’t go an hour without thinking about but I also knew that this was what it was going to take to accomplish a dream so big that it keeps you up at night.
I stopped thinking about becoming an Olympian as a dream of mine and I made it a goal.
I stopped hoping I would make the team and I started saying that I can, I will, and I must make the team. But what I didn’t know was that my heart would be broken long before the Olympic Trials finish line.
In early January I would develop an injury to my right knee that I could not fix. After a few weeks of cross training and treatment my knee had still not improved and I was left with two choices - find a way, any way possible to train through the pain of my knee or give up on my Olympic dreams. I chose to keep fighting and do whatever I could to keep training. Unfortunately, as I limped my way through the pain in my right knee I developed another injury in my left foot and it was no longer possible for me to run.
I have always lived and defined my life dangerously from one emotional high and low to the next. It is just how I am wired, and most things that happen in between these events are just a blur to me. While this is a devastating low point, I know that I will rise up and find a way to inspire you all with whatever high point is next.
Thank you to my sponsors @saucony, @gatoradeendurance, @corosglobal for their unwavering support and generosity.
Thank you to everyone else for their patience and kindness.
