Maybe 2 dozen each year..? Would a halfMth championship help identify our best talent for the future best marathoners? How do we compare to Japan and E. Africa?

How many HS boys can run 13.1 miles at 5 flat pace?
I’d reckon the answer is much closer to zero.

Umm 5:02 pace; yes that.

I'd say the answer is probably 0 right now, maybe Nico Young if anyone but I'd say his form isnt efficient enough for it and he doesnt have the specific workouts. In the past the only ones who could get close and maybe do it are Ritzenhein and possibly Ryan Hall, those 2 both did massive mileage in hs.

^This+ Rupp and I'm gonna say that German Fernandez would have also had a pretty decent shot at it
2 dozen from East Africa is what you mean.
I bet Christo Landry could have done it in HS.

The best marathon talent is still going to be the guys running 4:10 miles/8:50 3200m. If you had the HM as an event, you would have some 9:00 type guys running 67s but they aren't the future. They are just the ones that are too slow for the track.
You would need a cultural shift like Japan has were guys don't run their best event if it is the 1500m because the HM gets more respect.
Now a HM at the NCAA level might be interesting. Might get some of those 29 min 10k/XC stud guys to run say a 64 and think about giving the marathon a shot after college. But again I doubt the real talent (i.e. the guys down around 28) leaves the track early.
Kimball and Kingery went 64:19 and 64:39 in a 20k back in the day, and they were two of the legendary high mileage runners from California’s golden age, so I’m guessing the answer to OP is pretty close to 0
I'm pretty sure guys like Chapa, Hulst, Hunt, and Kimball could've easy run a half marathon under 66 minutes. I don't think that guys are training the same way these days to make it a common occurrence like it possibly would've been in the "heyday".

Probably used as a Training run, certainly not going all out. Very Few High Schoolers even run Half Marathons and Marathons nowadays. I think I read Steve Scott said he ran one in High School (Steve Scott was a 1:51 for 800 High Schooler, not sure if he ever broke 4:20 in the mile in High School, UCLA Coach Jim Bush told Steve Scott to go somewhere else, Steve Scott asked if he could Train with the team as a Walk on? Bush said NO you would slow everyone down), talking, laughing and joking the whole way, Thom Hunt ran a 4:02 indoor mile and 2:24 Marathon in High School.
I don't know why High Schooler's don't jump in Half Marathons as training runs, like many used to in the past? as a 12-15 Mile over distance runs compliments even the 2 Mile and it is easier to do it as a group. if the best High Schoolers did it all out, the National Records would be under 1:03 and under 2:14
None

Probably zero. A handful of high mileage guys throughout history could. Once again, Maybe Nico if he's doing high mileage.
It takes roughly 4 back to back 15:30 5ks to accomplish it. Guessing the last high schooler would drop off pace around 11 miles.
^ 15:38.5/5000 = 1:06:00

We barely had 10 pros run these times in the USA this year.
I'd say about a half dozen every year. If it was an actual HS event I think the number that could run under 66 might jump up to 10.

Pretty close to zero. I actually think Lukas Verzbicas could have. In the summer of 2011(?) when he was 3:59/8:29 and undefeated for all of HS in cross country. He seemed to have the right combination.
Chapa and his unbreakable 10,000 HS record is a good thought, as is Rupp when he ran 13:3x in high school.
I'm almost positive there was a pretty good HS runner who ran sub 67 randomly a few years ago. Need to see if I can recall his name.
Guessing Pre or Chez could have done it if they could win NCAA as a freshman. Probably a few others. There are always some 8:50 type high school runners who are 19 at graduation. I estimate about 1 guy every few years could do it for a total of 15 over the past 50 years.
Most if not all would struggle to break 70.
Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
How rare is it to run a sub 5 minute mile AND bench press 225?

Mark Coogan says that if you could only do 3 workouts as a 1500m runner you should do these
Red Bull (who sponsors Mondo) calls Mondo the pole vaulting Usain Bolt. Is that a fair comparison?
