I predicted 3:12 when he first announced he was going for sub 3. He's just too big and has too little experience running sub 7 pace. His dedication to training is impressive though. I think he will fall short today but come back later in the year and get it.
btw the Austin tracker might be the best I've seen for a marathon
He actually increased his pace. He’s through 10k in just over 40 mins. I predict maybe not a blow up but a significant slow down somewhere in the 18 mile range like most runners he’ll hit a wall. If not then actually impressive for someone with his mass.
pretty cool. what's his height weight?
He's running 7:30's now, looks like it'll be a painful back half of the race for him.

Not sure his height, a quick google search shows his weight at 205-215. He def carries a lot of muscle.
He’s now slowed down almost a minute per mile to 7:29 pace at only 20k. 0% chance he cracks 3. He’ll either DNF or crawl through at 3:3x
down to 8. ouch. trying to put time in the bank. live and learn.
1:31 at halfway. Guess it's over today.
Game over already. Went off way too hard. 1: 32 at the half but now running 7:30 pace

Don't know his current weight. He's slimmed down a lot in the last year training for (and completing) an Ironman. Probably weighs about 170

I must add though, that's still impressive for his size even if he doesn't finish.
8:16 pace for his last 5k.
But if he can regroup he could still run sub-3:30.
He ran 20:08 for the second 5km. That might be a 5k pb for him. Don't know how people can screw up their pacing that much. 20 seconds per mile faster than goal pace when he had already started too fast. Cmon Nick you should be smarter than that! He's going deep deep into the pain cave for the last 10 miles.

this is the type of thing that happens when you listen to people who say things like "when you think you have pushed to your limits, you are really only 40% there!"
this kind of mentality does not work for running an efficient marathon time. He's not a very seasoned runner. And when that is the case, you either need to listen to a coach for 100% of your running, or you are most likely going to learn some hard lessons along the way. It definitely happened to me in the beginning stages of running.

If that wasn't downhill, then he seriously messed it up, even for the first race.

It’s not his first race but certainly more focus was on time on this go around. I’ve said it a couple times he changes his tune in this block from definitely doing it this race to it being his goal in the future.
He’s very fit for his size but it’s difficult to move that much extra mass. I’d say he’s still in the low 180s. Needs another 6 months to get down to low 170s and he should be good to go as long as he keeps up the volume to where it’s been the last couple months.
he's pushing back. might be able to salvage a 3:20!
went from 8:16 per mile to 8:03 from 25 to 30k.
3:24 official.
If any normal person ran a 3:24 I'd happily congratulate them but for a former Army Ranger who makes a living recording shirtless videos on YouTube about his plans to go sub-3 he didn't even come close. He gave up his pace after mile 6 -- did he not know going into the race he couldn't hold that pace for longer than hour? Silly.
Terrible performance. Total rookie mistake.
I've been following this guy on youtube for quite some time. His tenacity and humility are very impressive, and I must say I feel bad for him today. Adrenaline got the best of him I suppose.
That happens. The kind of mistake of people who are super motivated make. Let's hope he learns from that and comes back stronger and faster.
