So here’s how the 5k went down. Weather was perfect. Course was very flat with few turns. And the right group showed up to run with.
The gun goes off and the ultimate winner tales off. He wins easily in 15:20ish. The real race was for second place. We had 4 guys all gunning for 16:30ish: the post collegiate runners in their 20s and the old giraffe. We took turns in the front. I took the first mile into the wind and over some little rollers. The split was disappointing: 5:27. I thought to myself, oh great, here we go again. My PR (16:40) is 3 years old, I just crapped out of that indoor a 5k, and stat thinks I’m a wuss. Maybe another 5k PR just isn’t meant to be.
Then Runner “S” pushes the pace and we turn away from the wind. Now it’s a tailwind. We hit mile 2 in 5:17. That’s more like it. Let’s freaking go! Right on cue, Runner “J” goes to the front and hammers hard. He opens up a little gap but the fourth member of the group, Runner “L” drags us back up into contact.
With 400 to go we were all together again and flying. I was in the catbird seat bringing up the rear ready to unleash the beast. Unfortunately I’m 40 and they are in their 20s. You can guess how this ends. I kicked hard with 200 to go, but they went at the same time and I never got around them. Somewhere in there we split the third mile at 5:01 but I wasn’t watching the watch at that point. Just hammering. The last bit to the finish line was at 4:18 pace per my watch.
I saw the finish line clock from maybe 100 meters out. It said 15:40. I was confused at first, thinking it must really be 16:40. As I went under it was ticking 15:58, 15:59, 16:00. I knew it was a big fat PR, but I didn’t realize what just happened. Breaking 16:00 had never crossed my mind, but sure enough I had: 15:59 officially.
My initial reaction was the course must be short. It only registered 3.06. After consulting the course certification, my gps data (which cut off a couple corners), and some very well respected runners, I concluded that I could claim sub 16 in good faith. So there you go. Every giraffe has his day. Mine was yesterday.
