They take it one step at a time, when the time will come, they'll attempt it. It takes time to build fitness and confidence. After Tokyo i'm sure they'll attempt it(2021-2022) before moving to the roads entirely a few years later.

But even Galen Rupp. Rupp is already 33 yo, and came out of an injury etc.
There's no way he'll break 2:05 in his life.
And yet people are like "OMGGG RUPP IS BACK..." like he's going to run 2:02.

Wha? and Kipchoge is 48 and he's braking WRs. So what?
Who cares if he doesn't break 2:05. That was never his goal. His goal was winning medals and gaining fame/money contracts. Guess what? He is a friggin Olympic bronze medal winner!! and a major marathon winner!! That is worth more than most of your top 100 or whatever marathoners you idolize and have a boy crush on.
In 2016, 2:08 runner Rupp was against not only Kipchoge but also 2:03 runner Biwott, 2:04 runner Lilesa, 2:04 runner Lemi, 2:04 runner Abera, 2:06 runner (and Boston winner) Korir.
The likes of you would not have even put him in the top 10 but look at that...he destroyed just about everyone. Was gaining fast on Lilesa near the end who was extremely lucky to get the silver. What happened to all your 2:03/2:04 runners?? Destroyed. Only Kipchoge survived.
Bottom line. you don't know nothing.

I certainly don't think Rupp is a medal threat, but I wouldn't rule out the possibility that he might still break 2:05. At his peak he was 30 seconds slower than Bekele's 10,000 WR, which is the equivalent of about two minutes slower in a marathon. And Bekele had a worse period of injury and ineffectiveness before his comeback.
Do you forget that Rupp's lifetime coach has been banned for doping violation and his training camp dismantled?

You blathered on about all of that and the point of it all was the obvious fact that it’s impossible for a person to know nothing? Thanks, tips.

That's not true.
Prove me there is more money to some random 5k or 10k road race than there is in diamond league with prize money and apparence fees?
Both Kipruto and Cheptegei run on track. They just don't try to set the record for now.
The diamond league cut out everything longer than 3000m you dolt. It was kind of a big deal around here.
It's a shame that he's doing this during "the shoe era" and a time in which there's less money in track. I just don't know what I'm watching enough to truly appreciate these records. Track is the ultimate experiment in legitimacy.
Don't worry, Nike clown spikes are on the way and we'll have a whole new era of clown world records
Yeah I was afraid of that after seeing the new spikes.
The problem is usually at track meets nobody goes full gas from gun to tape, so very often times are not very impressive.
I watched again Cheptegei's race in Monaco. The course isn't really fast, it had 2 uphill portions, an U-turn, a sharp corner and some other tighter than ideal corners. He could have gone up to 8-10 seconds faster on a course like the Prater and at least 5-6 on a course like Valencia where Rhonex ran.
With perfect weather shape and pacing, he can do a time-trial on a track in 12:41-12:43 range. However, this isn't even his best event, which is the 10,000, where he must be in 26:2x shape already, just like Rhonex. They should do an attempt together, being paced up to 5000m and then help each other with turns until 8000m or so to be on WR pace, then every man for himself.
epo epo boing boing
send in the clowns
Agree. Just wow. Beautiful form from start to finish. Like his famous out-fast world XC but not fading a bit, clearly stronger, has his fitness and pacing down. He earned the 12:51 start to finish.
Maybe its just me being skeptical, but I can never get as excited about super-fast road times. Hey, maybe it’s perfectly legit, but if you could take a crack at 12:37, wouldn’t you?
There isn’t a ton of money on the track for the rank-and-file guys - I understand why they head to the roads. There is definitely still money in world records.
Exactly. The WRs in track are always mentioned in discussions regarding elite running. In terms of the value for your brand and future appearance fees, claiming the 5000m or 10000m must be huge. Surely if there's a runner who thinks they can run those times, they would at least try.

Yes and it’s February where no high-level track action is going on outdoors. It’s logical to be taking these world record attempts on the road. Certainly it will be disappointing if they don’t try in the Summer/Fall in Heusden etc. I suspect they will
Even with the bouncy trampoline shoes, this race is a thing of beauty, solo from gun to tape, several hills, undulating course, wind, and a 12:51! If he does not scare the world record on the track in the 5000m and 10000m this summer, it will only be for lack of opportunities. Between him, Kipruto, and Barega/Kejelcha/GWet, we're going to see the best group of times in those distances since the 1990s EPO era. Coe didn't know what he was doing when he cut out anything about 3k.
That’s the fastest cadence Next% will have. He may have gone faster in shoes with less cushion.
The good thing about Fake world records like this is you are forced to look up the current
5000 record. It happens to be 12:31.
Inferior to Sammy Kipketer's 12:59 20 years ago.
