Marathons are boring. Like why would anyone ever want to run 26 miles?
10k on the track is bad enough... but I will never run a marathon, and just don’t see the appeal. Running faster will always be more fun and more impressive than running further.

Then you don't have to run a marathon.

Just the opposite, bud.
So you're a 100 meter guy? Good luck with the training.
I felt the same way in college, but post college everyone is training for a marathon. You have to be fast enough to get in meets like Stanford or you end up going to the marathon. You could specialize in the half I guess, but all your buds will be peaking for full marathons.
Marathon is popular because it's challenging enough that most people can't run one out of the blue, but it's accessible enough that with enough training most people (who haven't any illness) can run one.
It's the perfect ego booster for mainstream people.

If you've never run a marathon, then you really can't comment on how impressive it is can you? Besides, the best runners do run them fast so it's both fast AND far.
The marathon requires substantial training, strategy, nutrition, and fueling. So many things can go wrong over 26.2 miles. I've only run 3 but I hope to do many, many more and each of them was the complete opposite of boring. It's a life experience and a powerful one at that

I think what you're referring to is the 10k actually.
That is the mainstream, accessible race that people jump into, on a whim, with barely any training.
The number of people who race a 10k each year is several orders of magnitude larger than the number of people who race a marathon
0/10
Are there no trolls with an original idea anymore?

10k on the track is the worst.
IMO the marathon is a Fail for many participants who:
jog,
walk,
limp,
take breaks,
get injured,
have diarrhea,
ect...
All of the above.
Striving to simply complete an event is very different from Running a Race. Props to the latter. Major props.
While I have done a few, I kind of agree and have way more fun all-comer type track meets than road marathons. But to each their own.
I love the marathon. The biggest issue is just getting to the starting line rested enough and without injury.
The other issue is just having an ego check and knowing your limits. Thinking you can run 2:35 when you should be really running 3:00 flat what most people fail to do and the result is a massive smash into the wall and a shattered ego.
I’ve ran 2 and I can’t wait to run a third. So much easier than the 800m or the 5k which become complete suffer festive.

Happens to the best. That's all part of the appeal. You know? Challenging, unpredictable, uncertain outcomes of er.... Running a Race.
Any race is fun. Trolling without skill or imagination is boring.

Starno, I've heard many fat women talk about how they've "ran" a marathon. When you said, "it's the perfect ego booster for mainstream people," that touched me.
I love marathons but:
I think the half marathon is more suited to something like the World Marathon Majors- you can have more races each year so the runners can accumulate more points and they will be in the public eye more often.

Totally agree. I don't see the point of putting such ridiculous stress on your body. They are pretty boring and silly. Give me a sprint race any day every day.

This would be a game changer, if they added in like 10 half marathon races to the world marathon majors. They shouldn't have the same amount of points, but maybe 8-6-4-2-1 instead of 25-16-9-4-1. I'd love to see it. And maybe they could even switch a few of them out every year. Have a few that are always one of the half marathon races and then a few more that bounce around.
I feel the same way about ultras. I've run 10 marathons but it's not my favorite distance. I'm more impressed by a fast 5k than a slow marathon time. That said there are plenty of races of all distances. It doesn't bother me at all if people hate the marathon. To each his own. Marathons are largely popular because regular people can do them and get major props and admiration even if they are in reality a fat slow turtle.
