They play this at the gym a lot and man, it is really really bad and corny AF.
Why did this happen? Why was this popular?

It was edgy when it was released.

The Humpty Dance, Tone Loc "Wild Thang", Young MC, "Bust a move", Will Smith "Parent Just Don't Understand", anything by MC Hammer.
I'm assuming you're talking about hip hip from the 70s and early 80s.
At the time, America was much more socially conservative than it is now. During that time, especially as an African American artist, controversial or aggressive lyrics would not receive a record deal from any major record company or radio airplay. So in term lyrics were much more PG (or PG13).
Beginning in the late 80s and especially into the 90s, with the commercial success of gangster rap, we saw lyrics become much more aggressive and socially controversial. This is what brought about the Parental Advisory label on albums.
This pattern is similar in all music genres. Country and western music from the 50s and 60s was significantly more corny that it is now. Simply look at the progression of the Beatles. A lot of their original material was corny (I Want to Hold Your Hand) but towards the end they were writing songs about drug use (Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds).
The same is true in film. Watch a classic horror movie from the 70s or 80s and you'll be shocked at how corny most of it was.
Most older music and film was corny compared to today due to what becomes socially acceptable. People in 2040 will be saying the same thing about music/film from 2020, "Why was it so corny?"
The real question should be why does popular rap music suck so much and lack any substance? What happened to the story telling? What happened to songs that stayed on one topic the entire time? Songs now are much shorter than 20 years ago, and significantly shorter than they were 30-40 years ago. It's because they lack any real substance and creativity. Too many modern artists sound the same and just moan or mumble words into a microphone.
Pretty much nailed it, although there’s still some good stuff out there, J Cole springs to mind.
LOL you think old school rap is corny, you even listen to the garbage coming out these days? These dudes are emo AF with their autotune asses. Nothing they produce even has any meaning or contributes anything artistically.
All I need is two cups of some lean
And a bad b1tch just to roll up my weed
Bended through the city with the gold on my teeth
Probably in the scrape with the 4's underneath

So, to sum up. American culture was healthier in prior decades but has deteriorated to a point such that lowlife scumbags and ghetto culture is somehow acceptable and even glorified now. Sad state of affairs.
You mean like UTFO?
Are you referring to Run DMC and stuff like that? Their sh!t was definitely corny and tough to get into. But the early to mid 90s has some of the best rap and hip hop. Think Tribe Called Quest, De la Soul, Biggie, Etc
I thought this video was a joke. Apparently I’m getting old. 100million views and it sounds terrible. Sage C. has more singing talent than this kid.

I don't think that I've ever read so many replies to a thread that made me cringe so much. Every reply on here screams, "stereotypical white boy who spends too much time browsing the web."
Found the well past his prime boomer longing for an era long gone that's never coming back and wasn't really all that great anyways.
I was thinking about this recently. It definitely was edgy at the time, but looking back on it I think they were simply trying too hard. The same thing goes for the modern-day mumble rappers going on about money and women. They're trying to front for their fans and "haters."
There are a lot of good alternative/hip-hop artists out there today with better sound and lyrics that aren't about doing drugs and shooting people. You can't have that without 80s and 90s rap, though.
I can appreciate it in the context of the era, but I'm not a big fan either.

I ain’t a boomer. Nice try, grandpa. I just don’t live in the ghetto nor do I try to pretend that I do.

And you don’t live in the ghetto either. Why do you pretend?
