there's no reason why somebody can't. just drug up and wear the vaporfly victories or whatever they decide to call it.

Jakob will break it. He will have about 10 opportunities in his home meet, injuries permitting.
It's also slightly weaker than the 1500 WR. Crammie himself reckoned El G should have ran 3:41/3:42.
I don't agree it's a weaker record than the 1500. 17secs is an expected differential. A 3.26 man couldn't - and didn't - run faster than 3.43.
Jakob won't get near it (or the 1500 time). He doesn't have the basic speed. I doubt he could break 50secs for 1 lap.
Lastly, only doping will enable anyone to beat any world record today. I wouldn't give a cent that any record is clean.
You're a clown. Jakob closed a 5k in 52 or 53 (can remember) against Gebrihewet last year. Also, his 3:30 1500m clearly show's hes got ludicrous speed for a teenager. go back to the couch.

No kidding...I would agree. All people need to do is think a minute and understand what country is the current 1500/mile WR holder from, and what time period these two records were set in. ?

Marathon is an olympic distance.
The Mile is nothing. It's not even an event contested in 95% of the countries in the world. It's only a thing in US schools meet.
It's a minor world record of a minor event and top athletes are not focused on it.
Tell me what schools run the mile.
All I see is the 1600, whatever that is.

it is 4 even laps around the track, just as the 800 is 2 laps around the track, and so on. seems sensible to me
If there is anyone right now as good as Webb was and they are running in shoes that give a 2% advantage over what Webb had, then the mile record could definitely fall this year. I don't think either of those "if's" is impossible this year.
Mile for males maybe out of reach . Women's mile WR broken last year without special shoe . Maybe if some real big money was up for grabs 4:10 can be broken.
I'll take "What are performance enhancing drugs for 400 Alex."

Yes exactly. Why did the 1500m become the standard? 3.75 laps? Da eff???

It would take someone who really care.
American and British often don't realize that the mile and non metrics distance are non exsitant anywhere else in the world and nobody is interested in it.
Everybody run the 1500m.
It's like saying only Andy Murray cares about Wimbledon because tennis is rarely played on grass these days and virtually nowhere outside of Britain.
Wimbledon will always be the premier tennis tournament simply because of its history. The Mile will always be a premium WR because of its history.
Usual suspects implying Kenyans are so ignorant they don't know who Bannister was or what a mile is.
Btw., El G usually ran 3 mile races a year at his peak.

if you are looking at it from a purely metric point of view, it is 1.5 km which is a nice round number. but 1600 makes just as much sense, if not more, based on it representing an even number of full laps

I would say anyone who can regularly go sub 3:30 on 1500m and has sub 3:29 PR has a chance to beat the current mile WR.
NOOOOOOO
worst take

It makes way more sense. imagine if the 100m was the 75m
This post is because of Total Running Productions new video I bet. I wanted to post a thread asking the same question lol
Abolishment of drug testing.

He’s got decent speed for a 5k runner, but there are plenty of quicker 5k guys. He got annihilated in the WC final by guys with much slower (or nonexistent) 1500m PRs, even though he took the lead.
He’s got decent speed for a teenage 1500m runner, but there have been plenty of teen milers with better quickness. Elliott, Ryun, Ovett, Coe, Walker, etc. Compared to real mile greats, Jakob’s basic speed seems rather pedestrian.

The women's WR is still not very strong (compared to 1500m 3:50) If you put the first 6 of Doha 1500 final + Dibaba, Koko and another one or two of the best in one race, pay a premium for two of the slower ones to work as de facto pacers until 1200m, I am pretty sure Hassan and maybe even one or two more of them could break 4:10. That WR last year was run with a ridiculous negative split.

T&F distance standards are a mashup of binary & metric systems
Are there any high quality mile races that are times optimally within a training cycle to allow for a fast time? It’s not really a high profile race anymore on the calendar - if they ran it at the Olympics would the record be broken?

Agree 100%. Women's record is soft compared to either the men's mile or the women's 1500. What's the conversion Kellog/LRC uses? Don't remember the number, but it would predict sub 4:10.
