How are things going with surgery recovery?
How are things going with surgery recovery?
Thanks for asking.
Sure very recovery was going pretty well, but I’ve had a lot of other little issues, including osteiitis Pubis and hip bursitis.
Those were getting under control and I ran 4 days last week, and then my surgically repaired foot started hurting. I thought it was PF, but it’s actually in a different spot than the PF pain, and is feeling a little better after taking this week off.
Not sure what the future holds. To be honest, I knew during my last marathon cycle that there weren’t going to be any marathons in my near to medium term future, and I wasn’t sure if I’d really be all that interested in pushing hard to race at shorter distances.
So for now, my goal is to use running to stay generally healthy and to maybe stay aerobically fit enough so that I could start training harder on short notice should the desire strike. That’s working out okay - weight is around 156, which is up from marathon race weight of 145, but down from the 163 I was at over the summer and is fairly close to the 150 id be comfortable racing at for most distances.
It has been really nice to not feel pressured to find a way to squeeze a run in (nearly) every day.
Hey, hope it goes well. In oldish feet it seems a twinge of pain located almost anywhere can come up with renewed training. Often time millimeters away from the recent injuries! Cause for pause and more recovery just to be sure the trajectory is still good.
Good luck.
Smoove, are there things you would now change about your previous training, or are thinking of changing?
Not really.
I’d maybe stretch and do pre-hab some, but I don’t think it was the training in and of itself that got me injured. My last marathon cycle my mileage was mostly in the high 60s or low 70s. The quality days were almost exclusively at threshold pace. I added extra rest days by going to an 8 day week.
My body just wasn’t meant for the marathon. I’m a long striding, low cadence runner who hits the ground with very disproportionately high impact force. I have flat feet. I have a slight curvature in my legs and wide hips. I just wasn’t meant for the mileage necessary to properly train for the marathon.
So if I was going to do something different to avoid injury, it would’ve been to avoid the marathon. But I had such cool experiences running the marathon, and since it was sort of the last unconquered frontier for me as a runner, that I don’t regret it at all. I knew going into my last cycle that I was beaten up and run down, and decided to power through anyway.
