De Niro and Pesce playing versions of their characters 30+ years younger did not work at all. The younger characters were so low energy and it was just too obvious that they were old guys playing younger guys.
The movie was too long. I had to break it up into three nights because I kept falling asleep. It really would have been much better if the storytelling was kept chronological. It got confusing at times when they kept jumping back and forth between the two different time periods.
The Hoffa story is so interesting that it is difficult to have it share the stage with the Irishman's story line.
I know the point of the movie was that all of the gangsters lived big for a short time and then either died young at the hands of a mob assassin or died alone and isolated. But dwelling on the Irishman's late life actually became more of a statement on how our society generally warehouses the elderly. That made me feel sorry for the Irishman instead of seeing how his mob lifestyle was responsible for his misery late in life.
I love Scorsese, but this was a strange project. I think he was trying to make two movies in one and it didn't work that well.
