She ended up in "no woman's land" by 1 K as the lead group got about 20 m on her. Several gradually fell back to her but she still ran largely by herself, though with those ahead of her 20-40 m most of the way. Looked pretty sold throughout the race.
Taylor Ewert will be running in the girls 2 mile at the Kentucky HS elite today.

I am always surprised why Taylor Ewert does not run even faster on the track. She is very good at XC obviously, and can run a respectable 800 (~2:12 last year in a relay I think) so you would think her PRs would be a little faster at the 1 and 2 mile distances. Her PRs are right around 4:50 and 10:20 I think. I do not mean to slight her in any way, I am just curious why her PRs are not more like 4:45 and 10:05. Perhaps this will be the season.

From what I can tell, Ewert is very good at peaking at the right time. For example, she lost to Dudek and Hart by a lot at NXR, but she got 2nd at NXN. So she will be in peak shape (around those times you mentioned or even faster) for nationals. But she also does the racewalk, relays, and steeplechase (outdoors) during nationals so she's exhausted by the time she races the mile or 2 mile.
An 8th grader ran 10:25 in this race
