Hilarious how Masback throughout talks about Julian wanting KoKo to not lead the latter stages, which is exactly what she does.
Hard work and opportunity
Absolutely amazing run. 4:16 AR from someone who went to UNH for college, stayed in the Northeast, and runs for NB!!! Awesome.
The look on her face and manner right after the race were so amusing. Not in a bad way. Of course, not really sure what was going on in her head, but it seemed to be some combination of "What's going on?" and "What do I do now?" It was fun to watch, and the "farm girl" background (and non-major program in college) is certainly endearing. Will be interesting to see what she can do against Houlihan.
She looks much fitter than she did a few years ago. I estmate that she is 5 pounds lighter and more muscular. Her transformation is moving in the direction of Houlihan which makes me think she will match her numbers in 2-3 years.
Purrier v. Houlihan will be one of the best matchups this year. They are both very similar in stature and racing style. 1500 AR v. mile AR, veteran v. "new kid".
It's hilarious; if Koko had not lead and pushed the pace there would probably have been no NR in that race and Koko might have ended up 4th instead of 2nd.
The IAAF ruling (which is the authority on legality here) comes into play on April 30, 2020. This means that whether or not these shoes would be legal on May 1st, they are now.

Agreed. Elle played basketball in high school, was not a 3 or 4 season runner and my understanding is was interested in playing basketball at UNH as well. Absolutely 100% drug-free, clean living and running in the beautiful hills of Vermont. She is a tremendously talented, hard working woman and has surrounded herself with great teammates and a smart coach who lives and breathes the sport. Congrats to all. Elle has just scratched the surface with this race. I love her interview and the statements about not going after a record or even knowing what the record was but rather wanting to be competitive and hang with the leaders. She went for the win, not the time and came up with a fantastic result.
Very romantic!
What? Had she not led, she would have won in about 4:18. Leaders rarely win which is why races use pacers.
I think she would have been outkicked by Purrier and Reekie, if it had not be fast enough.
The alternative to Koko not leading was not someone else would be doing that favor for her in a pace that would suit her!
It would have meant a considerably slower pace for 800-1200m (and who would have been leading?), maybe even bunching together with Hiltz and Osika. Remember or rewatch the Zurich DL final where everybody gets bunched together after 800m.
Koko choose the correct strategy for her strengths, which is fast and steady pace. This prevailed against the main competition, Reekie and DBS. Nobody could expect Purrier be in the form of an 8 sec. PB. And in that shape Purrier was very likely unbeatable by any of the others last night.
LRC Note: Check out the results.
Thanks for the tip. When someone posts the results of a given competition. I generally forget to glance at them unless prompted, even if it's the obvious point of the thread. This makes it difficult to determine order of finish and I usually have to rely on indirect cues to figure out what the hell happened!
Regarding the places and times, whew! I would say a record is a fast performance under most conditions. it's fun to watch some observers pretend that Purrier's improvement has nothing to do with how her body has changed since college. Have to wonder if any of Allie's "2:25 at any size" fangirls see this kind of gradual but undeniable metamorphosis as more the norm than the exception.
That said, it's heartening to see an athlete outrun what looks like a punch of pipe cleaners from Germany put together at mostly favorable angles.
It will take 3:57 fitness to make the Olympic 1500 team, if not a 3:57 time, especially if order of finish is used as a measure of performance in the race and reported to outside agencies.
Looking at the IAAF points tables - that's a performance score of 1246. In the outdoor 1500 a 1246 = 3:55.06 (aka 0.07 behind Houlihan's PB from Doha).
Your Valentines weekend entertainment is gonna be set. Glasgow Indoor Grand Prix complete with Muir's world record attempt and who knows what else, then switch over to watch Purrier v Houlihan at USATF indoor champs.
I think the scoring for the indoor events overrates performances because far fewer good races and marks are achieved indoors.
But this is not deny the remarkable achievement; Purrier beat a 3:58/8:20, a 3:56 and a 1:57.9 runner in the process, this should count for more than dubious IAAF points.

WOW.
Coming into the race, her 1500 pb was 4:02.34. That converts to a 4:21.77 mile. Her actual mile pb was 4:24.88.
If she were an African, everyone would be saying her record was performance-enhanced...
+1
She has definitely toned up since college:

This is a sport of strength-to-weight ratio

Why did they start so far back off the line on the waterfall?

Oh, now I see. The mile start line is very faint.
Purrier isn’t in the RTP. Not saying that proves she’s dirty, but she isn’t subject to the strictest testing around.

After that performance she will be starting on Monday.
