I am working the same job I was working last year.

Health insurance penalty gone
I'm divorced and I get more back from claiming my alimony, meanwhile, my exwife has to claim what I give her, even though it was taxed from my paycheck.
Trump loves divorced men. lol
How much do you make?
Donald J Trump made America great again.
Looks like I owe 1700 more.

I used H and R online for tax filing. Seems like you need better tax prep services if you owe that much.

THANK YOU PRESIDENT TRUMP
I owe $5100. Only owed $3k last year.
What changed? You tell us. For most people (IQ over 25), you can look over your 1040 and figure out what changed in about 15 seconds.

this is not a $1,000 swing
Threads like this make me cringe as a tax accountant. Your refund or the amount you owe says absolutely 0 about what changed because it's entirely based on how the amount of tax you had withheld compares to your taxable income. Tell me what your total income, and total tax amounts were for each year and then we can talk about what changed.
FWIW both years are under the new tax plan so this has nothing to do with Trump...
Here's a list of a few possibilities:
-Change in filing status (got married)
-Change in withholding (w-4)
-Change in income level
-Change in credits claimed (had a kid/education credits)
-Change in Itemized vs. Standard deduction (Itemized this year)
-Change in 401k or HSA contributions
-Contributions to IRA
-Return done incorrectly one of the years
The billionaires thank you!
Just wait a few months and it will all trickle right back into your bank account via huge raises, better & cheaper healthcare, and lower prices for energy and groceries.
History has shown how wonderful this can be if you just believe!

960 - (-130) = 1090. he owed 130 last year.

Owing is a good thing. You want to keep your money in hand as long as you can. If you get money back, it means that you essentially wrote an interest free loan to the government all year.
Your bonus was a several thousand dollars larger than last year, but your employer withheld at at your top marginal rate, so you overpaid this year. Go buy yourself a few pairs of Nikes!
