I’m becoming less optimistic by the day this marathon is going to happen. The virus spread is ramping up in Japan. Hysteria or not, I don’t see anyone wanting to accelerate the potential economic and health cost to Japan if this becomes a true outbreak.
There is way too much on the line for Japan this year and they need to nip this now.
Here you go, a little bit more level-headed news, closer to the source, rather than your panicking from far-far away;)

Let's see... 2 weeks to go;) I think it is more like 90% happening, 10% not, as of right now... Just knowing the Japanese I know they are hardier than the Western 'snowflakes'... I'll wave you back from Tokyo, either way, if it happens or not...
I change my mind. It'll go on. The numbers on this thing don't go parabolic outside Wuhan until the end of March. Let's revisit end of March the whole situation. I pray it mutates to something harmless by then. It's obvious the organizations in charge of this stuff are on high alert. They told us as much.
But can we get rid of the "flu is worse" morons? They do not enact near martial law and quarantines for the flu. Even in Wuhan.
Panic?
No just versed in infectious disease. Close contact will certainly occur on the trains getting to start line, in the starting coral, amongst the spectators and most critically in the finishing areas. Clearly the professor your article sourced knows very little about marathon staging.
But as I said, I’m just not optimistic about this race starting. I think the risk (whether that be real or not), outweighs the reward. Watch the news closely in next few days.
The recent Kyoto marathon is a poor example. One, it’s not a global event attracting global participants with huge swaths of spectators. Secondly, just because the event happened successfully has nothing to do with a viral outbreak that we may not know the full extent of until 3-14 days later.
You're 100% right. Should it be cancelled? Yes. Will it be? I now agree with KawauchiFTW. Would I cancel my ticket if I were flying in? Absolutely.
Oh f*ck me... I thought Japanese are more hardened than that... No official news, just rumors: The Elite race will go on, the general race still exploring possibilities: either cancelled while, or limiting numbers of participants, esp. older AG might be cancelled...
Oh well... we’ll know soon:

I hope they decide ASAP. I have friends about to spend a fortune going from Western Canada to the Tokyo marathon. I remember in 2012 when they cancelled NYC after hurricane Sandy after thousands of us has already spent the money on airfare and hotels to get there....THAT. SUCKED.
More about the cancellation:

aahahahah...insane)))
Why don’t they just cancel the whole event?

Corona numbers rising fast. I suspect this marathon will be cancelled. If so, would there be refunds? Discus.
The original thread on the marathon being cancelled. OP called it. Sort of.
