International event with people traveling from all over the world to cough, spit, and snot-rocket on each other while high fiving 1000's of spectators and kissing the girls in Wellesley?

Was it cancelled in 2003 during the SARS outbreak?

No. The fact that you even asked this question tells me how easily the average person buys into media-induced hysteria. This is a non-issue on a global scale. Why would you not ask this about influenza which happens every year and kills hundreds of thousands of people globally?
Can vaccinate against flu to at least minimize symptoms and increase herd immunity.
I don't recall angst in US in 2003 -- perhaps lack of social media.
There's not enough info yet. It doesn't help there's few reliable reports from the epicenter. Ignore the flu equivalency guy above. We're all tired of that argument. Do they barricade cities every year because of the flu? Do they cancel the HK marathon yearly because of the flu? No. The flu progresses much slower.
No

They have cancelled the Hong Kong marathon.

What I said.
Worry about the flu AND coronavirus. You can worry about both. I'd say this situation is serious.
As for the OP's question, it's very unlikely for Boston to be cancelled at this stage. 0.5% chance?

They don't "barricade" the flu because nobody's scared of it, not because it's slow, which it's not, but if it were it would be more likely possible to quarantine.
The Chinese want to look like they are doing something, is all, in response to the bad PR and scare hype cooked up by the greedy media.
The streets of Hong Kong are full of right wing rioters, if you're more scared of a virus than that you're nuts.
Both Southwest Airlines and Frontier Airlines have suspended all flights to Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Beijing. Flights to Pyongyang have not been cancelled but both airlines are monitoring the situation. I suspect they will cancel their Pyongyang flights shortly.

Since neither of those airlines even fly to Asia it probably wasn't a big deal for them to cancel those flights. Pyongyang? Sure, why not.
But United has canceled flights to Hong Kong, Beijing, and Shanghai, which is a fairly big deal. I typically transfer in HK or Pek 3-4 times a year.
Boston no... It'll go on... But I'm worrying slightly about Tokyo, like only 2-5%... I'm counting on it to stay on, unless this corona... thing really gets out of hand in the next 2-3 weeks.

Since when does southwest fly to Asia? They only fly in North America.
It will be old news by then
Something fishy about the stats. Hubei province has only about 4500 of 7500 cases so far, but nearly all the deaths - 162 of 170.
In the provinces where the other 8 deaths occurred, there were 783 cases, a much lower death rate of about 1% than Hubei's 3%. Throw in the other provinces, and the rest of the world, where none of the infected have died, and you've got 8 deaths out of 3000 confirmed cases outside Hubei, or only .27% death rate.
What's going on here? Are the stats not being compiled consistently? Have the medics turned the corner on the virus and are handling cases much better than at first? Or, could it be the virus mutates quickly and has evolved to be less deadly to its hosts?

Slightly worried about Tokyo? Have you changed your mind in two days? I have. It's already out of hand with 20 people now. It's the next marathon to get cancelled, IMO.
I know think there's a slight chance Boston could get cancelled, like only 2-5%. I'm counting on Boston to stay on, but we don't know.
Bernie Bros gonna shut it down!
Lacks diversity!
No.
They won't cancel the Boston Marathon. They didn't cancel it during the big flu epidemic 100 years ago. They didn't cancel it during WW1 or WW2. It will continue as scheduled.
If things were such that Boston would be cancelled almost three months from now, there would be a lot more to be concerned about.
