"Tuohy, who won her third straight Nike Cross Nationals title this fall but, while winning, hasn't been quite as dominant on the track either this winter or last spring as in seasons past. She didn't want to talk after the race.
But Brian Diglio, her North Rockland High School coach, said she wasn't sick but simply "didn't have it" Saturday.
Prior to the race, Tuohy had said she hoped the race would be fun and without stress.
But Diglio said, "I think in the end she felt a lot of pressure."
He blamed himself for allowing that but added his runner, who owns multiple high school records and graced the cover of Sports Illustrated in 2018 as the Gatorade girls national athlete of the year, has been the "victim of unrealistic expectations."
That might extend to her qualifying for this year's Olympic Trials, which has been frequently mentioned. But Diglio spoke only of the idea Tuohy will be "better and better and better" each time she runs.
"It's a big cross to bear for any 17-year-old girl," Diglio said.
He said he planned to work with Tuohy on mental race preparedness and wants running to always be fun for her.
Diglio added Cain and other pro runners in her race had approached Tuohy to reassure her they've experienced slumps along the way.
"Any runner at any level experiences highs and lows, whether they're an Olympian or a pedestrian high school runner," Diglio said. "At times it's easy. At times you struggle. Sometimes you hit plateaus and just have to fight through."
