really fast but trolls will be here shortly to discredit
That is not a lot of elevation gain.
He ran something like this pace for another long run. 2:26 or so pace. less impressive than his half.
not even impressive unless he ran it at altitude, in the middle of workouts and a high mileage week.

It's true it is not a ton of elevation gain. Especially for that distance.
As to your other thoughts. He did a workout of 2k repeats on Wednesday. And this long run was at 7000ft. And that gives him 116 miles for the week so far.
A major injury is on the way.
Okay, at least 15s, probably more, for that kind of run at altitude.
So, 5:15 or so. 2:17 pace for a 50k without tapering. Solid. He's 2:12 or better on the right day.
That’s a long run on the road for a trail runner. Anyone know what shoe he did this run in, is it the carbon x or some version of it?
What is amazing is that all 31 miles were above 7,000 feet and on very dangerous very high altitude climate. He will win the trials definitely.
Got be in sub 2:08 shape now. Some boyo
Cancel the OT Marathon!!!

He's gonna rip at Comrades.
Does anybody with knowledge of Japanese marathoning training, which Walmsley expressed appreciation of, know if this sort of effort is consistent with that system?
Otherwise, it seems excessive for the marathon, but in line with Comrades.
I hope people at least realize that "mikesignxc69" is completely full of it.
31 miles at 5:33 pace, at about an average elevation of 6800'...is nuts. yeah it's not mountainous...but why would he want to run more hills that what he did? 1800' for 31mi is about in line with what the Trials will be. seems like a great location for a training run. the hills were worth 4 seconds per mile according to Strava...so his effort was 5:29/mi for 50k, at 6800' which would equate to about 5:14/mi. that's 2:42:45 for 50k which is faster than the official world record.
and people think he's only in 2:12 shape? he ran 17 miles the day before and hit 116 this week...a week after a half marathon race.
I don’t want to fanboy over him but I do like Walmsley, and I think he’s going to be fitter at trials than people think

I would be very surprised if he ran 2:07-08. 2:09 would not surprise me. I think he can run 2:09-12, and Atlanta means 2-3 minutes slow I hear. If he runs under 2:12 there, he could make the team.
Maybe with his additional 2-3 or weeks of training, he can drop it. I would need to see a better workout than this.

Not an expert on the Japanese system. Just picking out two guys with easy to find data:
Inubushi's log shows a lot of 40K fast runs, ranging from 5:50s mile pace down to about 5:30 pace. Then he ran 2:06:57.
http://bobhodge.us/running-logs/takayuki-inubushi/Jo Fukuda is a 2:09 guy that we've been talking about recently here because of his really high mileage. He ran a 2:10 last December 1st. I picked out his faster paced runs longer than about 10 miles in the past 6 months. I might have missed some:
July 17: 40 km at 5:45 pace (in 249.6 mile week)
July 20: 20 km at 5:08 pace (strong wind) (in same 249.6 mile week)
July 27: 30 km at 5:46 pace with 1884 ft climb (in 115 mile week)
Aug. 3: 30 km at 5:34 pace (in 197 mile week)
Aug. 9: 40 km at 5:26 pace (in 200 mile week)
Aug. 19: 30 km at 5:35 pace (in 112 mile week)
Sept. 15: marathon in 2:19:55 (5:17 pace)
Oct. 22: 25 km at 5:28 pace with the last 5 km at around 4:50 pace (in 136.5 mile week)
I think Walmsley looks stronger than Fukuda. People would nut out if you compare him to Inubushi. I haven't looked more closely at what else he did. Someone else can do that.
People will pick him apart no matter what. It's not like any US road marathoner could show up on his terrain and finish anywhere close to him. Even for 42 mile R2R2R, there is a zero percent chance any road marathoner could break 7 hours, and that's just 42 miles. Have them show up to a 100 miler with the same amount of time to train as he's had and they couldn't break 17 hours on their first go.

Hitting the record 14:09 at Western States less than 1 year before the trials definitely stands out. That is a super impressive time.
Translating that into 2:10 fitness in less than a year would mean a lot.
