Since the objective of the NFL is to win the Superbowl, not playing in it pretty much makes you irrelevant. Congrats to the Chiefs, who pulled away from the Lions, Jets, and I can't think of any other team that hasn't been there since 50 years ago.

Uhm, ever heard of the Cleveland Browns?
So Hank Stram, Len Dawson, Ed Podolak and Jan Stenerud can finally breathe a sigh of relief?

The Browns from 50 years ago are now the Ravens and they have won two Super Bowls since 2000.
The new Browns started in 1999.
I think it's just the Lions and Jets that have been around for 50 years without being in a Super Bowl in that time.
So the Detroit Lions are the only original team in the Super Bowel era to not make it to the Super Bowl ever.
Lousy NFL teams (no Superbowls and have been around a long time)
-Lions
-Vikings (some great teams but always seem to fall short)
-Bills (4 superbowls in a row, won none)
-Bengals (Don't think they've won it)
Other teams with shorter histories (Yes I know the titans come from the Oilers franchise)
-Texans
-Jaguars
-Titans
When you consider Superbowl appearances, yes, the Chiefs were neck-and-neck with the Lions and Jets until yesterday.
But the Jets are an "expansion" team, so they don't quite count as much.
For all the so-called awesomeness of the Chiefs, they really have been something less than awesome for a half-century!
Cool story, bro. Methinks it won't be another 50 years until their next appearance.
But the Jets are an "expansion" team, so they don't quite count as much.
The Chiefs and Jets were both original members of the AFL so I don't think they qualify as expansion teams. The Jets were originally named the Titans and changed their name when they moved to Shea.
Cardinals have never won a SB.
And, as a franchise, Cardinals have the longest drought for winning an NFL championship. Their last was in 1947.
Lions last won a championship in 1957, second longest drought.
Cardinals played in the Superbowl in 2009. The Chiefs haven't been there since the 60s, before it even WAS the Superbowl.
The old "Chefs" and Leon Sandcastle commercials told it like it really is.

I believe the Superbowl was indeed call the Superbowl, at least as far as the Jets win 1968-69 season, as well as the Chiefs in 1969-70. Those games themselves were not considered great but were epic in that AFL beat NFL.
Len Dawson, Mike Garrett, Otis Taylor et al. I was just a kid but remember that team. The Rams and Vikings were considered much better that year.

I'm aware of the Cardinals' appearance. I was responding to a post about teams that have not won a SB.
And you are incorrect about the timing of "Super Bowl" as the official name of the game.
Lamar Hunt came up with the name in summer 1966, before the first edition was played. And it was adopted by the NFL as the official label for Super Bowl III (Jets-Colts).
Chiefs won SB IV the following year.
The Chiefs have not really been a bad franchise at all just because they have not been in the SB for 50 years. They consistantly win 10 plus games each year and have made the playoffs over and over again. They just have not been able to win many of those games to get to the super bowl.
