Congrats Beth!
In my experience you should focus on maintaining a consistent weekly mileage. Work on getting your weekly mileage up to 10-15 miles a week leading up to your 5k.
I would take the next 2-3 weeks by doing 1-2 miles (either all running or a walk/run mix) at least three times a week (for a total of 3-6 weekly miles).
The start moving at least one of your runs to be a bit longer: two days a week: 1-2 miles, one day a week 2.5-3 miles. Keep that up for 2-3 weeks.
After 4-6 weeks, you can start either adding more miles to your runs (i.e., 3 miles twice a week and 2 miles once a week) or adding another day (i.e., running 2 miles four times a week).
You'll want to "build your base" (i.e., get a lot of miles under your belt) before making any major training changes (speed work, longer runs, etc.).
It's very important that you also listen to your body: is your body telling you that it can do a 2 mile run today? is your body telling you it needs a break? Only you know your body and your limits the best!
I had been running everyday up until the week before last tgen I started taking 2 days off a week. I do my 1 mile daily and have been pushing my distance up. Im up to 1 1/2 sometime 1 3/4 miles a day depending on how my body feels. I am a big time listener to my body and advance or make changes according to how it feels. My calves seam to be the only big issue lately it seams it takes them a long time to warm up and quit cramping up. So I stretch good and sometimes just have to let them warm up while running. Thanks for the input!
This is great advice. You have to get fit for running before thinking of anything fast. It will not help yet.
Also, be wary of these boards. There are very knowledgeable people here but unfortunately, for some reason, it can be overly hostile at times.
Whatever You do, don't run on the Path of Pure Hate.

What is this anyway? I've been coming here for years, and still don't understand what this disturbing graphic is for.
The run/walk approach is great for novices. Run 5 minutes. Walk briskly for one minute. Repeat until you complete your planned distance.
This will allow you to run faster when you are actually running, reduce the risk of injury, and allow you to recover faster to train the next day.
Are you doing something like Couch to 5k?
You have joined the ranks of runner! With these powers you will go far...
