800/1600 runners need to be able to drive their arms hard throughout the race, so all of the muscles around the shoulder joint need to be properly conditioned. I like to do sets of anywhere between 10-25 reps to get more of that endurance strength hybrid.
Core is also essential.
The best way to figure out what YOU personally need to work on is by running an all out or close to all out 800 and/or 1600 and focus on recognizing what muscle groups are holding you back. For me, I noticed that when running a fast 800m, all of my muscles felt great except my hamstrings and forearms, which were failing by the last 100m, causing my stride to tighten up and my arm swings to move too far inwards. So I personally added a lot of body weight upper body stuff like pull-ups and push ups, and started hitting a lot of deadlifts and calf raises. (If you do calf raises right they work your hammys too!)
not that we should blindly follow trends, but i think current lines of thinking on strength training for runners is high weight, low reps. you are lifting to get strong. you run to get endurance.
