In our Houston half marathon recap, Jon Gault wrote there was "a riptide of fast times — particularly among Americans. as for the first time ever 14 Americans went sub 1:02 and for the first time on the women's side 7 went sub 1:10."
No doubt about it, the times were historically deep for Americans. Guys who I'm not that familiar with ran sub 1:02. Of course I started thinking about the shoes, but then I started thinking maybe sub 1:02 in the half marathon isn't what it once was.
The world record in the marathon is 2:01:39 and 2:14:04. Top American times in Houston were 61:36 and 68:58. If you even split the world records in the marathon you'd need to run 60:49 and 67:02.
I think 1) it shows how far the marathon has come as now it really is attacked and 2) also shows how the shoes are changing the game in the marathon and half.
Without studying this I think the shoes have more of an effect in the full than the half as people may not bonk as much so comparing half to full times may look the half times not look as impressive, but that is totally just a hunch.
Any thoughts?
