UW's Sam Tanner a freshman runs 2:21.78 for 1k. The native of New Zealand will be a threat to win NCAA's this year in the mile I think. Thoughts?

The IAAF points tables don't give much credit for 2:21.78:
1:17.86 1:49.66 2:21.78 3:45.37 4:03.19 5:10.05 1036
However, I see 2:24 as equivalent to more like 4 or just under, and I predict Tanner will run 3:56-57.
He ran 3:38.74/3:58.41 as pr's in 2019. My prediction might be conservative. He has a 1:49 800m pr and ran 23:45 xc, so his speed decay is less than for many. That means 2:21 for him indicates pretty good mile shape.
Early season, and the stage of training a miler is doing in January, it's much harder to handle the oxygen debt of a 1k (or 800) for a miler than it is to go over distance (3k). This bodes very well for a stellar freshman indoor season.
I'd say it's the equivalent of a 2.17-2.18 in the outdoor season.
This kid needs to quietly focus on the 5,000m, he has the build to run under 13.

One might think, but he's actually far more like Nate Brannen or Seb Coe (small, but loaded with fast twich). The kid posted a video of him doing a box jump onto the top of an SUV
Iowa State had 3 guys run faster than that in a race in December. It can't be that impressive unless you are saying that ISU will have a bunch of guys run 3:56 which I doubt.

If true, insane.
Also impressive, the 2nd fastest time of the day was distance runner Cooper Teare(13:32 5k/6th at NCAA XC) in 2:22. Should have a lethal kick at NCAA's.
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
RENATO can you talk about the preparation of Emile Cairess 2:06
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
Running for Bowerman Track Club used to be cool now its embarrassing
Hats off to my dad. He just ran a 1:42 Half Marathon and turns 75 in 2 months!
