From what I understand from doctors, that's really rare. If it's legitimate Lyme disease, the runner's body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.
Huh??? No, no, no.

Huh??? No, no, no.
You folks realize that global warming is only making this problem worse, right?

He was making a joke about a rather obscure incident having nothing to do with Lyme disease.

Do tell.
I can't imagine running even 5 minutes with Lyme, I could barely walk after 3 days of flu-like symptoms! My mom had to help me out of the car when I finally went to a doctor...
I'm sorry but time + placebo are the reason more 90% of "alternative" (read: statistically ineffective) medicines. Glycerol monolaurate is just a soapy molecule used in a lot of cosmetics as... soap. Let's not get too crazy here.
Chronic Lyme is no bueno. Our entire family has it from living in NY. Don't get it.
There's pretty good recent evidence that disulferam *(yes, the alcoholic's drug) clears Lyme (and maybe Bartonella) from your body after 4 months . This explains why the FDA is clamping down on its use and there is - all of a sudden - a shortage now.. . But why get people healthy when it's far more profitable to keep them sick? Lyme Disease was engineered.
It sounds like we basically agree. I cited my 85/15 rule of thumb earlier saying that 85% (or so) of the time, alternative medicines fail. Your estimate of 90% is right in the same ballpark.
That said, I don't see how this could be a placebo effect for me. I've had no reoccurrences in, what, maybe three years. This is after several years of reoccurrences every 4-6 months in the years prior to taking Lauricidin. It's not like I consciously think about why I'm taking it. It fact, I really hadn't thought about why I was taking it until this thread came up.
But to be fair, let's assume it doesn't work for the previous poster. If so, no harm, no foul. He spent the cost of a pizza and beer to discover something that doesn't work for him. He can now move on to the next alternative treatment. Keep in mind... and this is very important... THERE IS NO CURE FOR EPSTEIN BARR VIRUS. I was told to reduce stress. Yeah. Try doing that as a competitive age-group runner. It's not possible. Stress comes with the workouts.
To Just Wow...
You can get tested for EBV now even if you feel fine. You don't have to wait until you feel bad again. The test will show whether EBV is active now or has been active several months ago. In my case, the results showed a relapse about 3 months prior to the test. I checked my running log and that's exactly when it occurred. Ask your doctor how far in the past the EBV test can detect an epside. I didn't ask and I don't know. Sorry.
Not to be too much of a jerk about it, but 15% is just about your placebo rate with sugar pills.
Thanks for the additional info, Fisky. I was definitely going through some very stressful times when my running tanked. I'll try to find out if bloodwork can determine if I had an EBV flair at that time (it was over a year ago I was going through this so not sure if that's too far back).

If you have to explain the joke then it's not funny anymore but I'm sure a few people got it.
The article, Robby Andrews, and the multiple replies here are forcing me to recommend this podcast. It’s amazing and you won’t regret it. It explains some of the instincts go try alternative treatments go lyme and the attitude towards the disease, especially in the 80s and 90s and why that attitude persists to this day.
