Sadly, he announced that it is not curable, but that he is beginning chemo today.
This is the beginning of an end of a legacy.

What kind of person goes and posts personal information that was sent specifically to members of his (extended) family? And if you are part of the NCC family you should be ashamed of yourself. Al never gave you the right to speak about such a personal subject. You have absolutely no class!
Calm down, Carius is a public figure in this sport. And if he sent this info to his entire alumni network it as good as broadcasting to the world.
I hope the best for his family.

I heard about it a few days ago and I have zero connections with NCC. It was bound to happen, like the other poster said.
As an alum who didn't hear about this I'm thankful to find out about the news. Maybe this isn't the best forum to find out news like this, but it's better than being in the dark.
Incredibly sad. What a great person and Coach. An all-time great in the sport.
serious Q: why begin chemo if it's incurable?

Life extension. Doing chemo will give you more time.

Many would argue that Al Carius IS NOT A PUBLIC Figure in this sport.
If you asked every NCAA track & field athlete at every level and NAIA and JUCO, less than 2% would know him. I bet 75% of all college coaches don't know of him.
Everyone in D3 think that everyone knows.
False...while I will concede many athletes (not competing DIII) are unaware of who he is, virtually every college distance coach (and most in other events) knows who he is.
I have never worked at the DIII level, but there is no possible way you could be in this profession for more than year or two and not come across some of his accomplishments.

Hey Kevin! I was at Augustana while you were at North Central. I think we ran steeplechase together at practically every conference meet. Anyway, just wanted to chime in and say that I hope you're doing well.
I'm sad to see this news. While we were conference rivals with North Central, there was always a level of respect for who Al was and what he built his program into. Al is a great coach whose accomplishments will be unmatched in D3 history, and I wish him and his family peace and comfort.
