Sometimes I can’t do my long runs on the weekend, so I have to do them before work. Any tips on how to do this more effectively?

there is no how. just do it
You have several options:
Wake up at 0500 and run with a flashlight, get back home in time to shower and make it a normal day. OR If your office has a gym and shower, leave your work clothes at work the day before, run your route to work, catch a ride, public transport or uber home. OR If your office or building does not have a shower, run home. OR run after you get home from work.
It's a case of how much you want to do it vs. whats easy.
What's preventing you from waking up early enough on a weekday to fit in a long run? I have two kids whom need to be fed breakfast and taken to school. I regularly run 10-12 miles in the morning before performing dad duties. Just means getting up early, 4:45am in my case.

If you have to get to work 8:30-9 it's not horrible. I've only had to do it once though. Got out the door at 5:25, ran for two hours. A lot of people start their runs at 5am every day.
If you have to get to work at 7 or something, yea that's probably going to suck sorry.
I do a medium LR on Mondays- wake at 4- 2 cups of coffee and a little snack, do some reading and out door by 5:15, done by 6:30-7, at work at 8.
I tend to go to bed early on weekend nights- no later than 9
I frequently do 16-20 miles on Wednesday mornings. Here is my schedule:
1) Sleep before 9 the night before. Lay out clothes/gels, get Keurig machine loaded up, lay out breakfast stuff
2) Up at 4:15-4:30 AM
3) Get dressed, drink a cup of coffee, eat a quick breakfast (banana and power bar), go to the bathroom
4) Out the door by 4:45-5
5) Back by 7 AM as the rest of the house is waking up
6) Eat a second breakfast with the family
7) Out the door to drop off the kiddo by 8AM
Not much to say here. You just have to block out the time and do it. Get everything ready to go the night before, get up 15 mins earlier than you think you need to and go for it.
I'm kind of jealous of people who can do a long run before work. I'm in the car driving to work at 5 am. I get off way earlier than most people though.
In New York it's absolutely standard for people to wake up early and start their run at 5-6 am in the morning in the central park (either on the trails with head lamp, or on the bright 6 mile main loop around the park or the reservoir). Most jobs in NYC are very demanding and can theoretically end at 5 pm, but more often than not take until 7 pm or 8 pm and longer so most people rather get the run out of the way early in the morning.
Problem with the early morning runs is lack of sleep, so you really need to get to bed early to get most out of them (7-8+ hours of sleep).
