I ran into the Dan vs. Dave video series on YouTube last night, and was shocked at how corny and stupid those commercials actually were. Then I remembered that the early-90s in general were just ugly no matter where you looked.
I can think of ten or one hundred reasons I believe this is so, but I'm wondering if anyone else agrees that 90-95 or 96 basically sucked no matter what?
You are right. It started with Guns & Roses in 88 - posers who tried to look like 70s bad boys, but could only manage to smoke lots of cigarettes. Then Joe Camel came on and suddenly everyone smoked. Then grunge happened around 90/91, and it was high fashion to wear a plaid shirt made of dryer lint, dirty baggy jeans, and $#!t kickers. Kate Moss made looking like a heroin addict sexy (not to me, though). The Dead were still around, so there were lots of deadheads still, and they didn't look much different from the grunge people. A little more colorful. Then came JNCOs. Seinfeld wore a puffy shirt for laughs, but they were all a little puffy.
Music was awful. In my opinion rock and roll died around this time: Spin Doctors, Friends theme song, Breakfast at Tiffany's song. There were a few good bands, like Pearl Jam.
So there's your early 90s: people who would otherwise be attractive wearing clothes the Salvation Army would throw away, smoking, listening to bad music, and saying anything that requires some thought is "ironic".
